Description

“This latest book by Raymond Smullyan follows a similar format, offering a mixture of interesting puzzles, “monkey tricks” designed to catch the reader out, dreadful jokes, and insights into serious mathematics. If you have enjoyed Smullyan’s previous books this one is self-recommending.” London Mathematical Society Newsletter “A reader without prior experience with mathematical logic would likely benefit from having done the logic puzzles in the first half of the book before tackling the second half. I have found it useful source of enrichment activities, though, and if you are a fan of Smullyan’s other works, you will find much to enjoy here.” Maa The author presents a bombshell puzzle so startling that it seems incredible that there could be any solution at all! But there is indeed a solution – moreover, one that requires a chain of lesser puzzles to be solved first. The reader is thus taken on a journey through a maze of subsidiary problems that has all the earmarks of an entertaining detective story. This book leads the unwary reader into deep logical waters through seductively entertaining logic puzzles. One example is Boolean algebra with such weird looking equations as 1+1=0 – a subject which today plays a vital role, not only in mathematical systems, but also in computer science and artificial intelligence.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Okay, let’s say you’re someone who might be labelled a “math whiz,” at least by yourself. And, of course, “math whiz” implies “logic whiz.” So you can dispatch problems like “the third baseman’s wife is the pitcher’s sister” in your sleep. And here comes Raymond Smullyan, usually starting out with Knights and Knaves, (which are easily dispatched unless you are not Raymond Smullyan.) And believe me–knights and knaves are wind sprints when you’re winding up for an Iron-Man.If you really like stretching your brain, get a Smullyan book.

⭐This is a nice book on logic and it is fun to read. It does, however, take a certain level of Mathematical maturity to read as some of the ideas build for several chapters (almost like a Math textbook). There are a moderate number of typos as one of the other reviewers mentioned. In some cases, these errors do make the book more difficult to read. Still, a nice book.

⭐Smullyan always is a clear and entertaining writer, but in this case his message was muddled by a ridiculous number of transcription errors. Dropped words (in one case rendering a puzzle unsolvable) plus errors in the formulae turned a pleasant read into a red pencil exercise in frustration. I hope Polimetrica takes better care when publishing future works.I sill would have bought the book because I enjoy Smullyan’s other books, but I wish I had known this one would be rough around the edges. If you like Smullyan then by all means buy this, but if you are just being introduced please start with another book.

⭐Another in a long line of great books by Raymond Smullyan.

⭐The author always entertains, but this book will give you a great review of logic. I enjoyed every page.

⭐Not quite as light-hearted a romp through logical puzzles as the blurb suggest. There are one or two of the promised jokes, but they’ve been shoe-horned in.

⭐I am enjoying the challenges, and it is fun for entertaining, too.
