User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “The ‘tour de force’ is that it is quite possible, even recommended, to read the book not linearly but by selecting pieces randomly, just for fun…We…urge readers of this brief review to read the book. We are sure that they will definitely enjoy it. It is quite possible that they will also find there ideas or flashes of inspiration for their own research.” –EMS Newsletter, June-2014″It is a rather remarkable achievement that the editors have managed to engage so many leading figures, 70 of them in all, and with such evident commitment…It is a fitting tribute to Turing’s legacy…” –LMS Newsletter,October 1 2013″This thick volume is a collection of Turing’s most significant papers along with commentary by people that appreciated and furthered his ideas. What will astound even the people that know the work of Turing is the breadth of his interests and depth of his competence.” –MAA.org, Jan 2 2014″There is a lot to be learned from his outlook and temperament, and Alan Turing: His Work and Impact can serve as both an instructional and an inspirational text.” –Notices of the AMS, Sep 1 2014″The massive volume is a collection of Turing’s key publications as well as commentaries about the papers. The volume is organized in four parts, with each section arranged by publication year of the papers…Given the number of minds involved in this undertaking, the editors must be congratulated…Summing Up: Highly recommended.” –CHOICE Reviews Online, December 2013″The volume is an excellent introduction to many exciting topics that Turing greatly contributed to, and in some cases founded, from computability theory to programming languages, complexity theory, the philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence, and the emergence of structure in biology…Readers of almost any background and any level will find something fascinating, something to capture their imaginations, in this volume.” –ComputingReviews.com, September 17, 2013″Introductions and commentaries are written by outstanding specialists in the given domains — altogether by 70 contributors. They provide insight into the significance and contemporary impact of Turing’s work…The book is published in a beautiful and careful way. It is a remarkable contribution to the celebration of the centenary of Alan Turing’s birth. It is indispensable for all interested in Turing’s work.” –Zentralblatt MATH 1270-2013″…much of what’s presented is for specialists…But there’s still plenty even for a non-mathematician like me, some of it surprisingly moving…no matter how well you know the life and work of Turing, you’ll learn something from this book.” –OECD Insights blog, August 26, 2013″This accessible book is an essential read for those interested in Turing’s work and provides a more contemporary perspective than anything else that is available.” –CyberTalk, September 2013″This volume contains a mix of writings ― some excerpts by Turing, but mostly writings about him and his work by those who understand his genius and his legacy. The writings include first person narratives of what he was like and what it was like to work with him, personal accounts of career-changing encounters with his thinking, and commentary on particular aspects of his work.” –Reference and Research Book News, August 2013″The new testament of computer science has come, 101 years after the birth of founding prophet Alan Turing…How big is the incomputable universe? Can digital machines think? Do daisies emerge from pure chemistry? If your soul craves answers to such questions, this is your new bible.”–Nature, June 19, 2013″Alan Turing: His Work and Impactmakes Turing’s most important papers readily accessible and affordable. With the four volumes of the previously published “Collected Works” now scarce and very expensive, this volume fills a pressing need in Turing scholarship. Moreover, the commentaries associated with Turing’s papers in this volume offer new and compelling insights into the continuing importance and relevance of Turing’s work, contextualizing it in contemporary contexts and providing richly elaborated explanations of how and why Turing’s work remains seminal for a wide variety of fields, including computational science, cognitive science, artificial intelligence and more.” –N. Katherine Hayles, Professor of Literature, Duke University Review Winner of the prestigious R.R. Hawkins Award from the Association of American Publishers, as well as the 2013 PROSE Awards for Mathematics and Best in Physical Sciences & Mathematics, also from the AAP From the Author Science is a very personal adventure for so many of us. I started out as a schoolboy like Turing, seeking out a computable world, investing a lot of ‘me’ into trying to understand how to make the world work better. The mathematics of incomputability became a wonderful game. When I arriving in Manchester as a research student in 1968, I found Turing’s only PhD student, Professor Robin Gandy, giving lectures on Turing’s work on the emergence of Fibonacci sequences in sunflowers. I was mystified. Now, when so many people are seeking out form beyond form, computation beyond computation, and structure beyond chaos – investigating randomness, human creativity, emergent patterns in nature – we can only wonder that Turing was there before us. So much of what Alan Turing pondered and brought into the light of day – techniques, concepts, speculations – is still valid in our everyday investigations.Turing was a grounded, yet visionary scientist. As well as bringing technical content to the mundane, he brought basic intuition to the technically arcane. This book took us three years to edit, and presents the most significant original works from Turing’s collected works – including unpublished works – along with commentary from over 70 renowned scholars, who write about Turing’s impact on mathematics, computing, computer science, informatics, morphogenesis, philosophy and the wider world of science. A common theme is that all these writers were influenced by Turing’s work. I learned a lot through those long months editing this book with my co-editor Jan, at times working overnight under the pressure of our deadlines. I hope our readers will find their own personal adventure through this large and engrossing book. Maybe it will change the lives of some readers – like Alan Turing changed mine. From the Back Cover This new and exciting book, published in celebration of the centenary of Alan Turing’s birth in London, includes a large number of the most significant contributions from the 4-volume set of the Collected Works of A. M. Turing. These contributions, together with a wide spectrum of accompanying commentaries from current world-leading experts in many different fields and backgrounds, provide insight on the significance and contemporary impact of A. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is by far the most comprehensive and complete book about Alan Turing. It is an essential element of any collection of works by this famous mathematician, codebreaker and pioneer of computer science.I also recommend ‘The Annotated Turing’, by Charles Petzold. The recent movie ‘Imitation Game’ starring Benedict Cumberbatch has brought increased attention to the work of this pioneer of computers.I believe like Sara Turing (his mother) that Alan’s death was not a suicide, despite the official findings at the inquest.Dr. Nelson Beebe’s bibliography of Turing is cited in this book as a comprehensive source of material written by and about Alan Turing.Occasionally, lecture notes and extracts attributed to Alan Turing have been lost to public view in the sixty years since his untimely death.Alan Turing was a role model for me in my career, encouraged by professors and family members.

⭐This is an excellent compilation of AMT’s work.

⭐Prof. Cooper and Prof. van Leeuwen have done a stellar job in editing this volume on Alan Turing’s work. You get Turing’s key papers, along with several commentaries and reflections by several of the leading scientists in those fields touched by Turing’s work. Worth every penny and eminently readable, a fitting tribute to a truly great mind.

⭐The content of the book is well above my level of understanding. It may however be a 5-star book for a computer specialist. I thought I would read about the life of Alan Turing all throughout the book when I bought it, instead what I have found is a lot of technical information. My mistake!

⭐This has to be the definitive book on all things to do with Alan Turing’s work and legacy.I looked at the contents and saw many aspects of Turing’s work that I would like to know more about…..it was all present in this book. Everything I could think of connected to Alan Turing was there plus lots of things that I didn’t know about……….a superb effort and magnificent compilation.

⭐I had to return this book simply because of its size. I give it 5 stars for the quality, content and massive research that went into it. Just too much for me so bought an alternative book on the subject.

⭐Fantastic book and read. Amazing price for the quality and amount of information about this great man and his work.

⭐THIS IS JUST A PAPERBACK GLUED DIRECTLY TO HARDCOVER. THE BOOK IS HEAVY & THE PAGES ARE FALLING APART. ALSO, THIS IS A PRINT-ON-DEMAND BOOK. SO NATURALLY, THERE’S COMPROMISE IN PRINT QUALITY ETC….GO FOR J COPELAND’S “ESSENTIAL TURING” INSTEAD WHICH IS NOT ONLY AFFORDABLE BUT HAS BETTER SELECTIONS & ANALYSIS.
