Description
This book, explores the conceptual foundations of Einstein’s theory of relativity: the fascinating, yet tangled, web of philosophical, mathematical, and physical ideas that is the source of the theory’s enduring philosophical interest.Originally published in 1983.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “An excellent introduction to the philosophies of space and time. Foundations of Space-Time Theories is the result of the author’s intellectual struggle to clarify the foundations of relativity theory for himself, and it will deeply influence all future thinking about the philosophy of space and time.” ― The New York Times Book Review
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐It is a pity that during my whole education as a physicist, I never heard about “form/content distinction”. It seems to me it is a very illuminating idea that I got after reading M. Friedmans’s book “Foundation of Space-Time Theories”. It could be a little romantic, but I would rather call it “human/nature distinction”.
⭐page XV: “All that is absolutely presupposed is an acquaintance with basic ideas of analysis and linear algebra on the level of an undergraduate course in advanced calculus.” “The present book makes heavier mathematical demands than the reader may be used to in the philosophy of science.” If you are not at this math level, I would not buy this book.
⭐The complexity of the mathematics of General Relativity produce an unfortunate side-effect: however satisfying they are from an aesthetic viewpoint, dealing with their rigour obscures the philosophical basis of their development.Friedman does an admirable job of investigating the currents of early twentieth century thought that led Einstein down the particular road he chose, via a number of useful visualizations made by clear and surprisingly elegant prose and clean math, without dumbing down the science involved in the name of science ‘popularization.’In short, Friedman does an excellent job of presenting the ‘why’ of relativity, rather than just the ‘how’.
