⭐This is an interesting book, but the title is misleading. It is not so much a history as a sketch. Mathematical details are not given (aside from the appendix – see below), and thus neither the content of instruction nor the real basis of the educational controversies is discussed with any depth. Don’t look to this book for details on textbooks used (although some are mentioned without detail), teaching methods, course of study (again, there is mention without detail), or contrasts in mathematical understanding. The focus is more on who was taught and to which rung of the mathematics ladder they were brought. The history, such as it is, is told through a series of short biographies, focusing on the person’s mathematical life, often including mention of a few mathematical people associated in some way with them. The nine chapter titles name the persons emphasized (year of birth added in review): Robert Recorde (1512), Samuel Pepys (1633), Philip Doddridge (1702), Charles Hutton (1737), Augustus De Morgan (1806), Thomas Tate (1807), James Wilson (1836), Charles Godfrey (not given), Elizabeth Williams (1895).A twenty-seven page appendix, entitled “A Selection of examination papers, syllabuses, etc.” includes the following:1802: Cambridge Tripos Papers1838: University of London Matriculation Examination1847: Battersea Training School1884: Examination of the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos1900: Perry’s Proposals for a New School Syllabus.
