Description

2013 Reprint of 1931 edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Frank Plumpton Ramsey (1903-1930) was a British mathematician who also made significant and precocious contributions in philosophy and economics before his death at the age of 26. He was a close friend of Ludwig Wittgenstein, and was instrumental in translating Wittgenstein’s “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus” into English, and in persuading Wittgenstein to return to philosophy and to Cambridge. This volume collects Ramsey’s most important papers. Contents: The foundations of mathematics.–Mathematical logic.–On a problem of formal logic.–Universals.–Note on the preceding paper.–Facts and propositions.–Truth and probability.–Further considerations.–Last papers.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The other collection of Ramsey’s papers (

⭐) is essentially a reprint and rearrangement of this one. This was the first collection of Ramsey’s papers and eventually went out of print. When it did so, Mellor republished these papers in “Philosophical Papers” so the contents of both this edition and Mellor’s are essentially identical (rearranged in a different order) with the following exceptions: 1) this edition (Braithwaite’s) contains Ramsey’s 1923 review of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus, which is omitted in Mellor’s edtion; 2) Mellor’s edition contains two more substantive pieces missing in Braithwaite’s edition: “Universals of Law and of Fact” (1928) and “General Propositions of Causality” (1929). Mellor’s edition is essentially an updated version of this edition (and the Wittgenstein review was published in Mind so anyone with JSTOR access can easily get it online). This edition is cheaper but it does lack about 23 pages of substantive material found in the Mellor edition.

⭐This book would only be of interest to a historian There are much better on its topic

⭐Very good copy, as described

⭐This is an indispensable classic! It was two steps ahead of everybody else when first published and it took decades for many to catch up. Full of sharp thinking on logic, mathematics and probability. It was a true loss that the author died at 26 years of age.
