⭐Mathematical People is a collection of interviews of a variety of people that do some kind of Mathematics. I found it to be an alright book. The only real dud interview was Morris Kline. A big problem there, and that was consistent throughout the interviews was boring discussions about teaching Mathematics – especially the debate over the “New Math.”Irving Adler’s “The New Math” is pretty much the first Mathematics book I ever read; it’s a great book(if you’re a Mathematician who’s read David Hilber’s Algebraic Number theory, and find anything less than that dull, then Irving Adler’s book is not for you). I don’t want to debate the New Mathematics merits or faults here; i just couldn’t help noting Irving Adler’s great little book.I couldn’t help noticing that if it was a puzzle game Mathematician, they often talked more about the New Mathematics than the Garrett Birkhoff and Paul Halmos es.If you like to read about interesting Mathematicians, whether you’r a Coxeter or an amateur puzzle solver, then one can get some fun reading, and appreciating the lives of those who liked some kind of scientific/mathematical adventure, and made it their lives. But, for me, Olga Taussky- Todd’s autobiography is still my favorite, and, in my opinion, the best chapter of the whole book.I remember these books, somewhere, in a book store way back in the late 1980s. I never bought them, or read them. I bought them five or more years ago; and, I finally got around to reading this first one. Actually, I remember reading the Olga-Taussky-Todd chapter, and loving her. And, reading it again was great. I’m hoping that volume two is a bit more Mathematical than these. Many more of them are the dreaded pure Mathematicians, and not the games, puzzle, and magician Mathematicians highlighted in volume one here.I was definitely struck by the whole magician thing. I’ve spent way to much time studying comparative mythology and Biblical Archaeology. I think I found great stuff; but, I’m feeling the Mathematical bug again; and, can’t wait to get these Mathematical People books out of the way, and get back to pure Mathematics books. But, to see Magicians confusing Magic with Mathematics was, maybe not disheartening, but a little frustrating. Jesus Christ is actually a sungod. Jesus Christ has twelve followers, the same number as the twelve Zodiacal constellations. There’s many early Christian apologists admissions that Jesus Christ is a Sungod, and I have primary source confirmed quotes that the twelve zodiacal constellations are personified. The Christians would soon argue against Mathematics and Science, and lead to the dark ages. Mingling mythology, superstition, with Mathematical Science just leads to the Dark ages.
⭐Amazing collection of interviews of Mathematicians compiled from the interviews published in College Mathematics Journal published in 1980s. I got it for 600.00. Best buy. Thank you amazon.
⭐This book is a great historical look at recent mathematicians.
