Description

The book is about Russian people in the World War II. These are small stories learned from the memoirs and diaries of frontline soldiers. All of them are arranged in a chronological order. The focus is on the psychological aspect, for example, a person’s behaviour at war.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I don’t have a problem on the imagination front so the very short to sometimes slightly longer glimpses into chaotic and traumatic situations is worth the effort. Gives me a not so gentle reminder on the safe secure life I have.

⭐These are really good first-hand accounts of WW2 from the Soviet side – all too often inadequately covered in the West.

⭐Great First person commentaries.Gritty, sad, humorous, and very interesting. A must for anyone interested in the Eastern Front in WWII.

⭐Historical

⭐The author tries to do something commendable but isn’t always very successful. We as readers can only welcome additional information and coverage of the Eastern Front when it comes to the Second World War. The everyday Soviet experience is still something of a mystery for many and more source material is always welcome. This volume is made up of excerpts from dozens of online sources that discuss the Soviet and Red Army war experience. Some of the accounts are graphic and many others are memorable. For those reasons, I’m happy this text was published. However, the translations, which I can only assume were done by the author himself, are poor and take away from the reading experience. There is almost no context offered for much of what readers will encounter and for those unfamiliar with the Eastern Front they will undoubtedly come away with more questions than answers. Authors like Svetlana Alexievich have done a tremendous job with oral histories as she puts together numerous interviews while weaving a larger narrative and helping readers understand a variety of subjects and events from the point-of-view of everyday Russian/Soviet citizens. Her interviews open a window into a larger history with vivid detail. This text often fails in that regard and has a limited utility, at best.

⭐The simple excerpts and stories bullet pointed within this book make it a very interesting and almost “un-put-downable” read. Anybody with any interest in The Great War, Russian culture, mind-set or habits will have that all re-inforced in bucket loads by reading this.

⭐Not bad, but seems too mutch of a cut and paste book. No depth on the story so sometimes hard to grasp what is told in it

⭐El libro es una selección de testimonios que el autor ha encontrado en internet. No he sido capaz de terminarlo. Hasta donde leí, me pareció irrelevante y carente de rigor.

⭐A good read
