This book is not for the faint-hearted, but it does reward serious and repeated application, requiring a basic knowledge of physical science for maximum benefit. The book exudes scholarly detail, accurate reporting and comprehensive analysis. There are few who could produce a book like this today and Boyer’s experience in writing a book on the history of mathematics presumably provided useful experience in preparing this volume, particularly in his analysis of the medieval period. In summary, an outstanding piece of scholarship which will be useful for scholars of the rainbow for some time. Boyer has done future generations of historians and scientists proud in writing this book.
