Description
This book takes the reader on a journey through the life of Richard Feynman and describes, in non-technical terms, his revolutionary contributions to modern physics. Feynman was an unconventional thinker who always tried to get to the bottom of things. In doing so, he developed an intuitive view that made him one of the greatest teachers of physics. The author captures this development and explains it in the context of the zeitgeist of modern physics: What revolutionary ideas did Feynman have, what contribution did he make to the development of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, how can Feynman’s methods be understood?Be enchanted by this book and understand the physics of the genius whose 100th birthday was celebrated in 2018.

⭐I’m a casual Feynman fan. I’ve read “Adventures of a Curious character”, “What do you care what other people think” and QED (but only skimmed his famous Feynman lectures). I’ve also read the Gleick (“Genius”) and Krauss (“Quantum Man”) biographies. The non-technical Gleick bio focuses on Feynman’s upbringing, college years, Manhattan Project and his development of QED (1948). It then largely skims over the rest of his life except for the Challenger shuttle explosion investigation in 1986 before his untimely death from cancer (1988). The Krauss book attempts to describe Feynman’s scientific work but I think fails to convey much understanding. This book successfully describes Feynman’s scientific contributions for a non-technical audience and intersperses the technical passages with key biographical details, which should be well-known to Feynman fans. The book also describes Feynman’s post-QED work, which is largely lacking from the Gleick and Krauss books. (Apparently, Feynman spent a great deal of time, working on quantum gravity- a problem which remains unresolved today.)Bottom-line: This is easily the best Feynman bio for non-physicists who want some understanding of what he actually accomplished.
