Description

In the early nineteenth century chemists knew of the existence of ninety-two chemical elements, from Hydrogen to Uranium. For nearly forty years scientists thought they knew the content of our planet and all of its contents. In the late 1930s the world of chemical science began to discover elements beyond Uranium – the ‘transuranics’. These new, super-heavy elements are probably not found in nature at all but can be detected, if only for a few fractions of a second, in precisely designed experiments using powerful nuclear tools. On Beyond Uranium: Journey to the End of the Periodic Table is full of exciting new concepts and tells the story of the author’s quest to discover elements never before known to man.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is really an excellent book on the study and synthesis of elements beyond uranium in the periodic table. And it is written by a first rate physicist (SIgurd Hofmann) in a clear understandable manner. He provides both historical (activities at Darmstadt, Dubna, and Berkeley/Livermore) and technical explanations of the various strategies for element synthesis. His account is very balanced and very fair. I would happily read additional books from this author. This has nothing to do with Hofmann’s book but I bought the Kindle edition and it is clear that Kindle continues to have problems with technical (scientific and mathematical) typesetting. I understand that exponents are not supported in the text (due to font limitations) BUT, mathematicians and scientists have been coping with this since the initiation of email: we write “10^15” to indicate the exponent NOT “1015” (as Kindle does) and, if necessary, we use TeX/LaTeX notation (which has been available since 1983! Let’s move into the 21st century.

⭐Thank you for this fantastic item

⭐If you’re a science buff like me, this is a truly fascinating read. If, like me, your interest focuses on the transuranic elements, then Exciting is the word. I loved Seaborg’s book on the Chemistry of the Actinides, which I read in 1956 aged 15. This too is by a pioneer in the art of element synthesis, so we get the inside story. A bit technical at times, maybe, but repays persistence.strongly commended.
