Description

Attributed to Iamblichus (4th cent. AD), The Theology of Arithmetic is about the mystical, mathmatical and cosmological symbolism of the first ten numbers. Its is the longest work on number symbolism to survive from the ancient world, and Robin Waterfield’s careful translation contains helpful footnotes, an extensive glossary, bibliography, and foreword by Keith Critchlow. Never before translated from ancient Greek, this important sourcework is indispensable for anyone intereted in Pythagorean though, Neoplatonism, or the symbolism of Numbers.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is an examination/interpretation of the Individual’s relationship within the physical world by number, arithmetic & geometry. A majority of this comes in Pythagorean tradition surrounding the interpretation & harmonization of square & oblong numbers. Such as, the Sesquitertian ratio & its musical connection with the number 4 or the Pentad’s association to Justice. What impressed me most was the thoroughness given to the diagrams & footnotes. Another was the correlation between the Ennead, Metallurgy, Hephaestus & Hyperion. Overall, a quick/easy read with a good glossary & bibliography. Truly, this work needs more attention & added upon in the future. Especially since number define plane, angle, spoken language & physical matter…

⭐I can’t see anybody purchasing this book who doesn’t already have an interest in numerology and sacred geometry. Your interests basically lead you to this book. Additionally, if you are a student of esoteric lore, this text is vital.Like what other reviewers pointed out, the book is a synopsis. Despite its succinct format, however, it is quite a dive into the depths of ancient thought. Other texts I recommend would be Manly Hall’s Secret Teachings of All Ages and his Lectures on Ancient Philosophy. Much of what Hall talks about in his books made this book comprehensible for me. Maybe they will help you.Reviewers also mentioned reading the book numerous times. Do that. This is an excellent text for meditations. In fact, I believe that’s what it was really designed for: to draw the truth out of you. Remember, this kind of information is intuitive, not strictly rational. The finer details of these Platonic/Neoplatonic philosophies are discovered in the amalgamate of the text and your inner Self, not solely in one or the other. Thus, you see the alchemical connection.

⭐It is a very good book as far as the contents of it. The book itself is good as well however, the reason I give it 4 stars is because a few pages aren’t connected to the binding so they are just loose. For the price though, it is definitely worth it.

⭐I’ve enjoyed this translated text very much. It is a shame that ore information is not given to this subject during the educational processes in our culture. Definitely worth the time required to read slowly and carefully to get the full meaning.

⭐Iambisius (c. 245 – c. 325 AD) book is a must for those of us who are into the beauty of arithmetics. The foreword by Keith Critchlow is informative and well written.

⭐Fun simple and to the point. Good brain candy.I liked this work in part because there was no contamination of the ideas from the author.

⭐This book will change the way you think about math, science, philosophy and music. You will revisit concepts that you thought you knew something about but never fully appreciated. It’s a deep theoretical journey through mathematical patterns, ratios, and the realm of forms.

⭐Each star only valid to those who love ancient number mysticism. If that’s you (it’s me 37×73 dot com) then you will love this book.

⭐This is one of the best surviving pieces of classical thought available. It is an excellent study of the classical world view. If however you are new to greek or classical thought then this might not find it that accessible.

⭐Hi, I don’t yet read in full this great title … However because a small book, I consult frequently. It is exciting to see and understand a new nature for numbers. Like a mathematician I consider interesting the new approach for numbers. However, an astonishing fact is that composite numbers has a special nature. Unfortunately I don’t yet see a path to factorize them … from the Theological point of view. This book, that can be re-printed under a new light … offers endless insight about the “true” nature of the so-called natural abstractions called “numbers”.
