Description

Does the future exist already? What is space? Are time machines physically possible? What is quantum mechanical reality like? Are there many universes? Is there a ‘true’ geometry of the universe? Why does there appear to be an arrow of time? Do humans play a special role in the world? In this unique introductory book, Dean Rickles guides the reader through these and other core questions that keep philosophers of physics up at night. He discusses the three pillars of modern physics (quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and the theories of relativity), in addition to more cutting-edge themes such as econophysics, quantum gravity, quantum computers, and gauge theories. The book’s approach is based on the idea that philosophy of physics is a kind of ‘interpretation game’ in which we try to map physical theories onto our world. But the rules of this game often lead to a multiplicity of possible victors: rarely do we encounter a simple answer. The Philosophy of Physics offers a highly accessible introduction to the latest developments in this exciting field. Written in a lively style, with many visual examples, it will appeal to beginner-level students in both physics and philosophy.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Excellent Book

⭐This book, in combination with After Physics, is all you need.

⭐I couldn’t be more pleased with my purchase.

⭐The first chapter purports to show how the philosophy of physics works. It is full of waffle where highly ambiguous words, phrases, and sentences are undefined. Completely unsuitable for a newcomer like me so I gave up. By contrast I have gained enormous pleasure and understanding from the following purchases:1. An Introduction to the Philosophy of Science by Rudolph Carnap – edited by Martin Gardner.2. Space From Zeno to Einstein edited by Nick Huggett.3. Philosophy of Space and Time by Tim Maudlin.4. Philosophy and the Foundations of Dynamics by Lawrence Sklar.

⭐I am not finished but have read about 3 chapters. This book is clearer than another i bought on the subject and yet there are still portions that i had to reread 3-4 times to understand with assumptions made about the readers knowledge. As a philosphical and bright non- physicist it is just about holding onto me. I realise however it’s a difficult area to teach.

⭐Excellent introductory text into The Philosophy of Physics. This is by far the most helpful book I have purchased for my course so far. I have already placed my order for I

⭐A Brief History of String Theory: From Dual Models to M-Theory (The Frontiers Collection)

⭐Great book! An understanding of the main theories of physics is “required” to fully grasp the subtleties

⭐entertaining and informative but certainly not an undergraduate read for introductory courses for the fresh ones! beware of the theoretical approach (manifolds talk etc.)!

⭐Excelente texto introdutório, ainda que o autor deixe de lado muitas questões atuais, como aquelas acerca da identidade e da individualidade de objetos quânticos. Deve ter sido uma preferência dela, já que está ao par da literatura sobre isso.
