Description

Reimagined for full-screen and touch-optimized apps, Windows 8 provides a platform for reaching new users in new ways. In response, programming legend Charles Petzold is rewriting his classic Programming Windows—one of the most popular programming books of all time—to show developers how to use existing skills and tools to build Windows 8 apps. Programming Windows, Sixth Edition focuses on creating Windows 8 apps accessing the Windows Runtime with XAML and C#. The book also provides C++ code samples. The Sixth Edition is organized in two parts:Part I, “Elementals,” begins with the interrelationship between code and XAML, basic event handling, dynamic layout, controls, templates, asynchronous processing, the application bar, control customization, and collections. You should emerge from Part I ready to create sophisticated page-oriented collection-based user interfaces using the powerful ListView and GridView controls. Part II, “Specialties,” explores topics you might not need for every program but are essential to a well-rounded education in Windows 8. These include multitouch, bitmap graphics, interfacing with share and search facilities, printing, working with the sensors (GPS and orientation), text, obtaining input from the stylus (including handwriting recognition), accessing web services, calling Win32 and DirectX functions, and bringing your application to the Windows 8 app store.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Llegó mucho antes de lo esperado. En muy buenas condiciones.

⭐The book itself seems to be OK (I haven’t read more than a couple of chapters). The reason I’m downgrading it is that the C++ code samples do not build with Visual Studio Professional 2015 on Windows 10, due to a missing file App.g.h. It is not acceptable to have code samples that do not build.

⭐Chas. Petzold is an amazing technologist. I have followed his books since the earliest days of Windows. At times Chas. tends to be a bit verbose and seems to enjoy sharing his obvious very deep mathematical background with his readers; witness the chapter on 3D animation. That said, there are pearls of wisdom and factoids I have not found in any other books or periodicals. I recently spent the better part of 2 days researching what should have been a simple explanation for yet another of Microsoft’s horrible error codes and/or statements. Obviously, common tasks and task definitions have undergone major changes to support Windows8. One obscure change is the definition of event handlers.Chas. Examples demonstrated the correct syntax and format which I was unable to locate on any sites to date. Bravo Chas…..As a reference and modeling guide you could not do better. My only issue is the lack of color( which of course is rather poor considering that Microsoft is the publisher).Money well spent at twice the price.Tony donato

⭐This is my first time diving into any Microsoft technologies. I’m a typical Linux and open source guy. But, the idea of programming little custom apps to run on Surface and XBox using patterns and syntax I’m familiar with was appealing. The book is easy to understand for a Microsoft novice. It’s well organized and thorough. I don’t feel like I need to buy any other references or books to play around with code now.

⭐As of now this is the best overall book for Windows 8 development!Fundamentals are explained extremely well and supported by excellent examples. It is an eye opener for the .NET & and WinRT “mess / mix”.If you just discipline yourself to read the entire book from beginning to end, and build all of the exercises by yourself, you will be a very confident Win 8 developer that doesn’t have to use Google too much.Mr. Petzold, thank you for the great book!

⭐It had no technical meat

⭐1)Creative Examples. Great way to understand concepts.2)Detailed Explanation.Am In Love with the book !!Thank You Charles Petzold

⭐Top quality.

⭐I have had all the Charles Petzold books through the years but feel this one is the most difficult to follow. The structure of the book seems very random compared with other books on this subject. Although he does go into some topics in depth the samples and code are very specific and don’t translate easily into the real world. If this was the first book I had read on XAML I think I would have given up. Wrox have an excellent book on Windows 8 programming which is a lot more general than this on and ultimately more useful on a day to day basis. Others may disagree with me on this but I wont be picking this book up that often and it will be an early trade in for me.

⭐Received in excellent condition, as good as as-new.

⭐A weighty book on programming Windows. Lots of useful content from an author that has a long history of programming windows applications.

⭐Not a good book to start WPF.
