Description

This revised edition provides patient guidance in its clear and organized presentation of problems. It is rich in variety, large in number and provides very careful treatment of relativity. One outstanding feature is the inclusion of simple, standard examples demonstrated in different methods that will allow students to enhance and understand their calculating abilities. There are over 145 worked examples; virtually all of the standard problems are included.

⭐I am self studying physics. I tried to use Griffiths’ book multiple times, but always found myself frustrated with his explanations. Thinking it was my lack of preparation, I went back and read through Purcell and Morin’s book which is at a slightly lower level. That did not help. I then tried Ohanian’s book. It suffers from one of the main problems that Griffiths has. He leaves key concepts as exercises in the middle of chapters for you to do. There are no answers so you don’t know if you are right or not. Most are reasonable in difficulty level, but some are very hard. Then later he tells you to use the answer (that you don’t know if you got right or not) as part of another problem further on in the text. The explanations aren’t all that great. I would be willing to bet that people who found that book great have already taken a graduate level course in electrodynamics.I have only read a quarter of Wangness’ book, but it is so refreshing to read. Everything is making sense. Wangsness’ book is definitely the best book of the three for intermediate level electrodynamics (ie after freshman, but before graduate.) He seems to anticipate questions that you have. So many times in Griffiths I would read something and have a question that I could not find the answer to. Wangsness seems to anticipate the questions and answers them following the discussion of the concept. His explanations are excellent. The book is broken into small chapters where only one key concept is discussed. Lots of worked out examples in the book. Each chapter is followed by about 20 exercises which, unlike Griffiths, are meant to reinforce what you have learned. The first few are easy. Then the rest make you think, but they are doable. The answers for odd numbered ones are in the back. Griffiths just throws impossibly hard questions at you after brief discussions of topics. As a self learner, you try to do every problem and just feel like you are an idiot after a while. That never happens with Wangsness. If you understood the chapter, you won’t have difficulty with most of the problems.Proper prep for this book includes any college freshman electrodynamics course (Halliday and Resnick, etc). Then read a book like Taylor’s Classical Mechanics to get used to working at a higher level than freshman level physics. (Electrodynamics is more difficult than Classical Mechanics IMHO). Read an undergrad math methods book (like Mary Boas’ book). Then try this book. If you find it difficult, go back and read Purcell and Morin’s book (you do need to know Special Relativity for this book).Thank you Professor Wangsness for such an excellent book. This book should replace Griffiths book as the main undergraduate EM book.

⭐I use this book for a second year at university, and I can say it is the best EM book I have ever found. It is clear, complete and full of interesting problems. Some people complain about mathematics, but I think EM cannot be fully understood without all the mathematical formalism. I recommend to have a course on vector calculus before reading this book.I cannot tell any con, just be carefull with equation (10-18), which is not the general expression (compare with (4-10) and (21-42)).After mastering this book, I would recommend Melvin Schwartz’s or Landau to get into Electrodynamics.

⭐Hard cover with only shelf wear. Yes please. Thank you very much.

⭐I very much enjoyed reading this book. It was a lot of fun to learn E&M out of. I also think that this is a good reference as well once you get the hang of the material presented in this book.

⭐This is the best EM undergrad/graduate level book for EM1 and EM2.The only problem is that the seller indicated “good condition”, but the binding was split.

⭐This book seems to sit very well in between Griffith’s and Jackson’s E&M books in terms of the transition of higher skill.

⭐It is brand new! The book smells like it was just printed. It is in perfect condition, I love it

⭐This book is indeed very modular, if you have any previous EM training and the required mathematical skills you won’t have any difficulty using this as a practical, working reference. As a consequence of the modularity, there is some repetition of the information but it’s a small price to pay for the completeness of the individual modules. One of my favorite features of the writing is the clear references to previous results making it easy to review the references (and completely eliminates any need to search the index). I far prefer this to the usual method to make only vague references to previously developed concepts and is one reason why I find this is a good reference work.Overall, the level is more advanced than Cook though better written. Some of the development of the material is rather novel (e.g., Amperes Law) and considerably more approachable than corresponding works by Smythe (ugh), Peck, or Stratton. I recommend Feynmans lectures in addition to this book. I find the two complement each other quite nicely.
