As the war drags on, claiming more lives and crushing the sprits and hopes of those who endure it, James and Mary Beth, and Kevin and Harriet come to understand that even if they survive, the world they knew will never be regained, that their futures have become as uncertain as their own survival. Yet each resolves, for his and her own reason, to carry on as best they can, until the end.

⭐ I would have given this five stars except for the editing which is the worse I have ever seen. The prequel to this, “Look Away” I bought in hardback and it didn’t have this problem. This book I bought as a Kindle version and the editing was atrocious. Misspellings, wrong use of present and past tense, completely wrong words in sentences that made no sense. It went on and on, all the way through the book making it hard to properly enjoy the book. I was going to give this book three stars due to the editing but the story is just tii good. Give the story five stars, the editing one star. Do yourself a favor and don’t buy the Kindle version. Buy it in paperback or hardback.

⭐ Written by an author who knows, and understands, soldiers and war. Coyle gives readers a glimpse into the lives and thoughts of soldiers involved in a civil war that seems never ending, that destroys everything they cared about,and kills or wounds every friend they have. The individual movements of military units and the soldiers in them is explained so readers not familiar with civil war military operations, have a good understanding of what is going on. Well written, both from a military point of view, and the psychology of individual soldiers, this is a story worth reading.

⭐ Coyle looks at the individual, in whatever context. Something we tend to forget about history is that individuals make it. Not battalions, regiments, or brigades, but the individual man on the firing line. Or, as important and far more likely to be overlooked, the women back home, and what they endured. This is a great book, this, and its predecessor, Look Away. I cannot recommend them enough to students of Civil War History.

⭐ I have read three of the authors books and in all cases enjoyed the story. The author goes to great lengths to develop the characters. InformingI have read three of the authors books and they all have the same trademark. The characters are well developed and you hope they have a happy ending. The proof reading appears to have been done by a fifth grader, and I think he is failing English. Many sentences make no sense and it gets worse deeper into the book.

⭐ As published this book desperately needed to be proofread before it went on the market. Numerous misspellings, fractured sentences and in at least one case a main character had gender swapped in consecutive sentences. I believe I have read all of Harold Coyle’s books and this book is not typical of his work.

⭐ Here’s a gosh ‘n by golly read for avid Civil War enthusiasts. Harold Coyle is well-known for his military history writing and this work is no exceptuion. The “Brother (North) vs. Brother (South)” is the way some of this bloodletting war was fought, or at least one relative paired against another.If the length (510 pages, with notes) is disturbing just remember this (uncivil) war went on for four sanguine years. Instead of one “glorious battle” looked for at the outset it took a grinding down process to finally end it. Coyle manages to capture this aspect quite well.The women (bride and sweetheart) are able to reconcile first although not under the best of circumstances. And, the brothers? What’s your best guess or estimate?

⭐ Great mix of history and fiction. Weaving the Bannon bros. in with actual civil war units and covering most aspects of the war’s social and military events. Highly recommend these two books for anyone interested in Civil War and US Military history in general

⭐ Book 2 was just as good as the first book in the series, Look Away. This book is more about how the grinding war played out and how the two sides kept fighting until the bitter end. I do wish there had been more about how these brothers did after the war, but I guess that is for another book!

⭐ Perhaps my biggest complaint about this book is that it may be too realistic. I am a life-long student of the War Between the States and recognize the contents of this book to be a faithful and interesting representation of life on the battle lines. That said, however, it was a bit depressing. So I would have to give it 5 stars for historical accuracy but it was not a fun read. Perhaps a stronger undercurrent of optimism might have made the story more enjoyable.

⭐ The book is rather drawn out as the author spends as much time on historical events as he does on the character development. Perhaps too aggressive an undertaking. Still I quite enjoyed it.
