⭐Some may find this an interesting bit of history, but history was not my objective. I was interested in gaining some insight into Crowley’s writing. I was disappointed as I found that (for me) Fuller’s style is almost unreadable. He spent too little time expounding upon ideas communicated by Crowley and instead focused upon flattery of a sickening sort. Fuller concentrated upon weaving this behemoth of flattery in gaudy and grotesque styled analyses with a verbosity which flitted and wandered across the leaves of this title much as the moth doth flutter and float all the while endeavoring in vain toward the effulgent light of the fires which consume such of god’s creatures should they orbit too far from their necessary course.Yes, he tried too hard. And yes, it’s that bad.I put it on the shelf after a couple dozen pages. It may be for you, but not my cuppa.

⭐“Ol’ Bony’s” critical masterpiece

⭐I have not actually seen this edition but I imagine it is in format like most of the Health Research reprints – unattractive facsimile (but still useful since this is a rare text). I am lucky enough to possess an original hardcover though, so I have read the text. STAR IN THE WEST won Crowley’s competition to write an essay on his work (in fact it was the only entry). It is a somewhat fulsome and fawning work which praises Crowley and his early writings in overly extravagant prose. Fuller was a brilliant mind (later a military tactician) who assisted with Crowley’s Rites of Eleusis and other endeavours. STAR IN THE WEST focuses mainly on Crowley’s poetical and dramatic works (which are possibly of small interest to some occultists) to illuminate how Crowley was attempting to achieve a synthesis of Eastern and Western mystical techniques. It is a fascinating insight into the mind of an important Crowley associate – but will be found very old-fashioned by many modern readers. Fuller was also a brilliant occult artist – it’s a pity someone doesn’t reprint STAR IN THE WEST with some of his artwork (of which colour plates can be found, for instance, in Weiser’s edition of THE VISION AND THE VOICE). The text of STAR IN THE WEST will also give some information about Crowley works such as “The God-Eater”, “Jephthath” etc which are even rarer than STAR IN THE WEST itself – but the book is primarily of interest as a historical document. Fuller and Crowley later had a falling out and Fuller went on to be instrumental in designing tank-related strategies in World War II. Of course, the title refers to Crowley – Fuller saw Crowley (as indeed Crowley saw himself) as the Prophet of the New Aeon, and thus the ‘Star’ that had come to illuminate the mind of Western Man. Get this if it are really fascinated with the legend of Crowley; otherwise, most can probably live without it.
