Description
New Theory of the Earth is an interdisciplinary advanced textbook on the origin, composition, and evolution of the Earth’s interior: geophysics, geochemistry, dynamics, convection, mineralogy, volcanism, energetics and thermal history. This is the only book on the whole landscape of deep Earth processes which ties together all the strands of the subdisciplines. It is a complete update of Anderson’s Theory of the Earth (1989). It includes many new sections and dozens of new figures and tables. As with the original book, this new edition will prove to be a stimulating textbook on advanced courses in geophysics, geochemistry, and planetary science, and supplementary textbook on a wide range of other advanced Earth science courses. It will also be an essential reference and resource for all researchers in the solid Earth sciences.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “This book will serve as a great resource since it is jam-packed with tables, graphs, and figures covering every imaginable aspect of modern geological analysis. For a complex and ambitious undertaking, it is remarkably readable. …Highly recommended.” – CHOICE”It is principally the task of every geoscientist to highlight such enigmas and paradoxes through questioning and criticism, but few have the overview, the facilities, the time and the willingness to do so. Don Anderson is among those rare geoscientists who have wisdom and capability of in-depth criticism, as is evident from this book … In addition to conventional (highly relevant and up-to-date) references, the added ‘googlets’ will be of immense help for students and researchers to find many relevant but otherwise inaccessible web documents. The mode of presentation is enjoyable and the illustrations are reader-friendly. This book will definitely motivate new research and I strongly recommend this book for libraries of universities. Last but not the least, I must congratulate Cambridge University Press for publishing such a good book.” – Rajat Mazumder, Geologos”Anderson does a fine job combining the latest research from diverse fields to support his major viewpoints.” -Pure Applied Geophysics Book Description An interdisciplinary textbook on the origin, composition, evolution of Earth’s interior, for graduate students and researchers. Book Description This interdisciplinary advanced textbook on the origin, composition, and evolution of Earth’s interior provides a complete update of Anderson’s Theory of the Earth, including many new sections, figures and tables. This stimulating textbook can be used on a wide range of advanced courses, and is an essential resource for researchers. About the Author Don L. Anderson is Professor (Emeritus) of Geophysics in the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He received his B.S. and D.Sc. (Hon) in Geophysics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics and Geophysics from Caltech, and Doctors Honoris Causa from the Sorbonne, University of Paris. He was Director of the Seismological Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology from 1967-1989. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He received the Emil Wiechert Medal of the German Geophysical Society, the Arthur L. Day Gold Medal of the Geological Society of America, the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, the Bowie Medal of the American Geophysical Union, the Crafoord Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Science and the National Medal of Science. He was installed in the RPI Hall of Fame in 2005. He is a Past President of the American Geophysical Union. Professor Anderson’s research centers on the origin, evolution, structure and composition of Earth and other planets, and integrates seismological, solid state physics, geochemical and petrological data. He is also interested in the philosophy and logic of science. Read more
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I used this as a textbook for a “volcanic plumbing” course in grad school, where one of our objectives was to learn about magma formation. The book starts off with how the earth was formed chemically, moving on to characteristics of material movement and behavior in the mantle, with some thoughts on the core. The strengths lie in providing petrological and geophysical data to explaining interior processes, as well as giving space for competing hypothesis. One weakness are some of the references to internet searches or “googlets”, which work, with mixed results. However, references are easily accessible in the back of the book, complete with further reading suggestions and some explanation of more complex or controversial subjects. Recommended as an introduction to earth’s internal processes for undergraduates and graduate students with prior coursework in geophysics and petrology.
⭐I recently (2013) bought this book after reading the first edition (1989). Most of the text is lifted verbatim from the previous edition. The material is repetitious and runs on in an almost stream-of-consciousness manner. There is very little new material compared to the first edition, with the exception of a new section on tomography. This is surprising, since a lot must have been discovered in the past 15 years. Anderson is still beating us over the head with a heterogeneous mantle dominated by eclogite.
⭐I have only read some of this book so far, but Dr. Anderson impressed me with his style in the first 3 pages. To study the earth he argues, why take a geocentric view? He begins with the constraints on accepted planetary formation theories and builds a model of what early earth could of looked like, subtley using the scientific method and asking and answering questions every step of the way. He draws on chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, every applicable branch of science to make his conjectures.
⭐Don Anderson’s latest book is a must-have for Earth Scientists interested in the interior of the Earth. It is packed with the latest ideas, in addition to extremely useful reference material, innovative “googlets” (luv ’em) and a lot of common-sense, reality check material. Recommended for students, teachers, and laymen alike.
⭐Excellent review of mainly geochemistry of the Earth. Very helpful reading and reference book.
