⭐I’d like to consider myself a skeptic; the United States’ public appearance is far from noble and good, and I’m pretty sure most people agree that the CIA, the Federal Government, and the US Military does NOT have the average American’s well-being in mind. “What Uncle Sam Really Wants” was not my first introduction to studies/writings of American dissidence, however it was my first introduction to [reading] Noam Chomsky. This brief book offers an overview of what US Imperialism really means. Chomsky discusses prominent themes such as the US monopoly of third-world resources, suppressing humanitarian citizens (such priests or churches that form support groups for the people), subsidizing free-enterprise capitalist endeavors, puppet governments with fascist overtones, and so on.Although the subject matter may be uncomfortable to read for some, it is nevertheless thought-provoking and true (as far as I know). Clearly, Chomsky has researched what perpetuates the US as a global superpower, and the average citizen has not. Chomsky’s work directly contradicts what’s shown by the politically run media, as far as US world views and goals are concerned, which is probably a primary reason why some people won’t touch his subject matter. Chomsky dismisses media bias and supports his views by citing sources. The truth may be hard to swallow, but it is nevertheless an important and necessary step out of the cave.

⭐It can be read in less than 2 hours. Its a very clear and concise explanation of U.S. policy since World War II.About the last 1/3 of the books are his citations. So there is not much rooms for disagreement. Its a “must read” for anyone who wants to understand our role in the world.

⭐The book arrived in excellent status. It is a great thought-provoking book that summarises a lot of international issues,

⭐Great book

⭐Amazing book. The author made a great analysis of the american foreign policy. This is one of best books of all times.

⭐I have read this book many times and love it.

⭐A little to radical left for me.We were giving foreign aid in the form of wheat to foreign countries, Yeah, I know that we were dumping it because our our farm price supports were creating a surplus. At the same time the Soviet Union was exporting AK 47s to destabilize third world counties. but in Noam’s eyes that was OK?Give me a break.

⭐I bought this book along with “Hegemony or Survival” after Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez held it up in the UN. I had not even heard of Chomsky before then. After reading more about the controversial Chomsky on the Internet, I canceled “Hegemony or Survival” and decided to keep “What Uncle Sam Really Wants” (a shorter read) to get a better feel for Chomsky’s work before I spend more money on it.After what I read on the Internet, I started reading this book with caution. To be fair, I have to admit that I never completed it… for a reason…I don’t like many of the things that the US government does abroad. I think we stick our noses in too many people’s business in the name of “national interest”. I would like to see the US pull back its military and rather guard our own borders. I’d like to see the US stop giving so much money to foreign countries, and rather use that money to make a decent education available to every US child, and make decent health care available to every US family. That being said, the US has a major foreign presence right now, whether I like it or not. What I found tough to believe is that the US has this foreign presence as part of some major conspiracy to dominate the world and make all foreign economies subservient to our own, which is how I understood Chomsky’s message.Hugo Chavez loves to believe that because it gives him a stick with which to bash the US.I think the US simply looks at unfolding events around the world in the light of how it will impact, firstly, the US and secondly, global stability, and then acts according to that interpretation. While some of the US actions abroad are highly questionable, I think those actions stand on their own as cases of bad judgment. That’s a far cry from a conspiracy to dominate the world. And that is why I didn’t finish the book. I’m sure lots of people will consider my views simplistic or naive, but this book was just too much for me to believe.

⭐The book is a short but great analysis of US policies, and although published several years ago still belongs to the most important US critic works. The main sections of the book are:1. The main goals of US foreign policy (contains “Protecting our turf”, “The liberal extreme”, “Restoring the traditional order”, “The threat of a good example” and more)2. Devastation abroad (contains “The crucifixion of El Salvador”, “Teaching Nicaragua a lesson”, “Making Guatemala a killing field”, “The invasion of Panama”, “Inoculating Southeast Asia”, “The Gulf War”, “The Iran/contra cover-up” and more)3. Brainwashing at home (contains “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.”, “Socialism, real and fake”, “The media” and more)4. The future (contains “What you can do” and more)
