Editorial Reviews: From the Back Cover Raves for Dr. Johnson’s previous classic, High-Speed Digital Design!”….one of the finest efforts to come along in the field of applied high-speed digital design because of its focus on providing tools for the whole design team bringing a high-speed product to life. For all the PCB designers and circuit designers out there, buy it; read it; keep it.” — Dan Baumgartner, Printed Circuit DesignFaster and farther: State-of-the-art signal transmission techniques In High-Speed Signal Propagation, Howard Johnson and Martin Graham bring together state-of-the-art techniques for building digital interconnections that can transmit faster, farther, and more efficiently than ever before. Packed with new examples and never-before-published high-speed design guidance, this book offers a complete and unified theory of signal propagation for all metallic media, from cables to pcb traces to chips. Coverage includes: Managing tradeoffs between speed and distancePhysical theory of signal impairments: skin and proximity effects, dielectric loss, surface roughness, and non-TEM mode propagationGeneralized frequency- and step-response modelsCalculation of time-domain waveforms from frequency-domain transfer functionsDifferential signaling: Edge-coupled and broadside-coupled differential pairs, bends, intra-pair skew, differential trace geometry impedance, crosstalk, and radiationInter-cabinet connections: Coax, twisted-pair, fiber, equalizers, and LAN building wiringClock distribution: Special requirements, repeaters, multi-drop clock distribution, jitter, and power filteringSimulation: Frequency domain simulation methods, Spice, and IBIS About the Author DR. HOWARD JOHNSON has accumulated 30years of experience in digital design, consulting withengineers all over the world. He is the featuredSignal Integrity columnist for EDN Magazine andChief Technical Editor of IEEE―02.3 standards for FastEthernet and Gigabit Ethernet. He frequently conductstechnical workshops for digital engineers at OxfordUniversity and other sites worldwide: www.sigcon.com.DR. MARTIN GRAHAM is Professor Emeritus ofElectrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at theUniversity of California at Berkeley. He specializes inteaching the design of reliable and manufacturableelectronic systems.
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐As a SerDes design engineer, I have been reading multiple materials to understand transmission lines. This is the best handbook I have ever read so far and has answers to some of the pondering questions that I have had. Very useful especially when you are an engineer trying to build stuff for high speed digital systems. It’s kind of expensive but it’s worth it. I got a used one and I received it in good condition.
⭐Very detailed and well written book about high speed design. A lot of the concepts are clearly defined, lots of good information about specific sub-parts of the design , even though it is highly abstract in the later chapters.
⭐Very good content and still relevant even being published so many years ago. I recommend this highly for any EEs working in the Signal Integrity arena.Note that this is not just a re-hash of the original, but the first chapter does review some of Johnson’s first ‘Black Magic’ book. Both of the ‘Black Magic’ books are excellent references.
⭐I thought this was going to be an update of the original 20 year-old Black Magic book. To my pleasant surprise it is something else entirely. This has to be one of the more entertaining books on electronics that I’ve read. This one is already getting be 10 years old. I hope Johnson is working on another one.
⭐I enjoyed the vast information this book held as well as the easy comprehension and how it engulfs you with information.
⭐Very informative book by someone who is clearly an expert in the field . The transcripts of questions that he has answered over the years are very informative
⭐good technical book lots of information
⭐Must have for Digital Engineer that would like success with high-speed signals.
⭐Informative and interesting
⭐Brilliant book.
⭐Good book to get an understanding of high signal fundamentals. There are a lot of theoretical stuff but i missed a more practical advise of what should to be care of at which frequency range. That’s the reason for only 4 stars.
⭐A good rererence to remember the details.
