Description
This book offers a concise introduction to the analysis of electrical transients aimed at students who have completed introductory circuits and freshman calculus courses. While it is written under the assumption that these students are encountering transient electrical circuits for the first time, the mathematical and physical theory is not ‘watered-down.’ That is, the analysis of both lumped and continuous (transmission line) parameter circuits is performed with the use of differential equations (both ordinary and partial) in the time domain, and the Laplace transform. The transform is fully developed in the book for readers who are not assumed to have seen it before. The use of singular time functions (unit step and impulse) is addressed and illustrated through detailed examples. The appearance of paradoxical circuit situations, often ignored in many textbooks (because they are, perhaps, considered ‘difficult’ to explain) is fully embraced as an opportunity to challenge students. In addition, historical commentary is included throughout the book, to combat the misconception that the material in engineering textbooks was found engraved on Biblical stones, rather than painstakingly discovered by people of genius who often went down many wrong paths before finding the right one. MATLAB® is used throughout the book, with simple codes to quickly and easily generate transient response curves.

⭐Wanted to increase my understanding of transients in circuits. Am learning a lot.
⭐You plug your light stand into a socket. A small spark jumps. How interesting could that possibly be?Well, very, it turns out. The story of these “transients” is certainly unknown to most of us.But beware, there is math involved. Calculus, Laplace Transforms, Complex variables and such. Although the mathis kept at a sophomore level, this is not a book for the timid. Two semesters of calculus at a minimum. If you have the right stuff, you’ll enter the land of the budding engineer. To Professor Nahin, thank you for all your books from Oliver Heaviside on. I teach Differential Equations at a local college, and your books supplement my lectures with great stories. Soon I will enter the land of Laplace Transforms, and I will now know how they are used in the EE classes. This is off topic, but if you have any new information on Heaviside since the 2nd edition of that book, I’d love to know.Heaviside vs Preece. What a movie it could make!
⭐A masterpiece; a true jewel of technical literature. My very special tanks to Professor Nahin.Carlos Torres (a professor, too.)
⭐Nahin’s “Transients for Electrical Engineers” is another of his terrific books, this one going into the mathematics of the Laplace Transform and the use of the transform with switching transients and the mathematics of transmission lines, topics that are particularly important for Electrical Engineers. I especially appreciate the examples and problems that illuminate the use and power of the Laplace transform and the historical notes that Professor Nahin provides that give the reader insight to the development of the transform.
