Editorial Reviews: About the Author Thomas W. Hungerford received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He has taught at the University of Washington and at Cleveland State University, and is now at St. Louis University. His research fields are algebra and mathematics education. He is the author of many notable books for undergraduate and graduate level courses. In addition to ABSTRACT ALGEBRA: AN INTRODUCTION, these include: ALGEBRA (Springer, Graduate Texts in Mathematics, #73. 1974); MATHEMATICS WITH APPLICATIONS, Tenth Edition (Pearson, 2011; with M. Lial and J. Holcomb); and CONTEMPORARY PRECALCULUS, Fifth Edition (Cengage, 2009; with D. Shaw).Douglas Shaw received his M.S. from the University of Illinois and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He was a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota, and is currently at the University of Northern Iowa. His research is in combinatorics, number theory, and tertiary mathematics education. He has written instructor’s guides for Brooks/Cole and worked on many other ancillaries as well. When he took Abstract Algebra in graduate school, he used one of Thomas Hungerford’s texts and never sold it back to the bookstore.

⭐This text book isn’t terrible. It’s been a while since a math textbook actually is user friendly without a tutor/teacher as it is.My main grievance with this book is that I’m finding it to magically materialize numbers/variables in the examples that are given and it leaves you wondering how they got to that step. This is why I say the examples are not very thorough and, literally, expect you to read between the lines.There is a solutions manual for this textbook, if that tells you anything….it is more helpful than the text alone and I recommend it, but the solutions manual only has the solutions to odd numbered problems, so there’s that. (Bonus: the even numbered problems are more difficult that the odd ones, too. So have fun.)

⭐Book was fine. The condition (used) in my opinion wasn’t acceptable. It was pretty beaten up.

⭐As a college student it is impossible to go to class all the time. With this book you don’t have to. Everything is clearly explained and there are tons of practice and critical thinking problems.

⭐I’ve been using this book for the past 3 weeks now, but the textbook seems to be lacking explanation. It’s as if all that was included in the chapters was examples. Often times, when doing the chapter work, I realize that the questions aren’t related to the chapter itself, or any of the previous chapters as a matter of fact. All in all, it’s a horrible textbook, as if it was only made for money.

⭐The textbook, even though used, was in good condition as advertised. I had a good experience with this transaction and will continue to utilize the program for further textbook purchases.

⭐Came within 3 days, just in time for the start of class. It does a good job of teaching you the material because I have to use it a lot and I am passing with an A.
