User’s Reviews

Review “Rollins’ second Jake Ransom adventure is tighter, more magical and more thrilling than the series opener. Likely to win Jake more fans, this will have adventure seekers of both genders clamoring for volume three.” — Kirkus Reviews”A wild ride with some quick-thinking teens fighting for survival.” — Library Journal”Last, but certainly not least, James Rollins has decided to dominate more than just the adult thriller field…Rollins has taken his love of Indiana Jones and made it fresh and fun for the younger set.” –Jeff Ayers, Author Magazine From the Author About James RollinsJAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins’ knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his “roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel’s science, history and geography.” Rollins’ rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that “After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man.”NPR calls his work “adventurous and enormously engrossing…” and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: “If you’re a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large….All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker.”The Story Teller’s StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James’ travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing “seminars.” James’ mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King’s Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.) Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ I am a huge James Rollins literary fan and bought the book without reading the background material. Early into the reading I found it somewhat odd that the main characters were of, I guessed, junior high-school or early teen age. However, the usual plot and character development characteristic of Rollins made the book an enjoyable, even stimulating read. Time travel, portals, evolution, alchemy, you name it! It was only later that I found out that the Jake Ransom series was targeted to the 10+ year’s old reader (and I am 64). Oh well. Rollins is an impressive author of this genre and it’s encouraging that he is directing his efforts to the next generation of his readers/fans. Make sure to read the books in sequential order as this is a series in the making. I’m not sure that grandparents read books to their grandkids anymore, but I intend to try. And, if not, we’ll wait for Disney or someone else to see the potential of both Rollins and his incredible characters and put the Jake Ransom stories out on DVD’s that the entire family can enjoy.

⭐ I loved the idea of the first book in the series. Having a myriad of civilizations living together in, mostly, harmony, being able to communicate with one another through no sort of language barrier, and having action on top of action. This second book is more of the same. Where the first one introduced the characters, plot, and was mainly about the Mayan culture, this book is about the Egyptians. It seems like the next will deal with the Norse. Rollins seems to be focusing on one ancient civilization after another, and that is fine by me.It starts with the watch Jake got from the previous book taking him back to his friends in the different time period. Nefertiti is a key character, and ends up conducting herself as a true warrior princess should. Jake is a great hero, and the other characters compliment him nicely. This story has a lot of intrigue, like the mysterious happenings before the trip back into Calypsos, the ancient world. It brings Jake face to face with his own past, and future as well. Time is a big theme is these books, and this story brings it to light even more. Rollins does a good job of leaving the reader fulfilled with answers, but also leaving the right amount of questions unanswered as well. I like Rollins’ adult books better than his young adult, but this is a great read to get adolescents interested in reading, as well as the historical places mentioned throughout.

⭐ This is a wonderful young adult book. It’s nice to read something that’s about adventure and excitement without a bunch of sex scenes. There’s nothing wrong with sex scenes but sometimes I get tired of them being everywhere. Just a fun book. Below it asked the age level that you got the book for: I am 67.

⭐ Just as exciting and adventure filled as the first in this series with a promise of more to come! I like how James Rollins, author of the Sigma Force novels, writing about black ops operations, mixing science, religion and history, made the transition to young adult writing so successfully. The tone and voice are so very much different from his adult novels that sometimes I forget that I am reading a book by James Rollins.Jake Ransom and his sister Kady are on yet another adventure through time to find their parents and stop Kalverum Rex from taking over the world. From the first book in the series to this one, I noticed a growth in Jake – taking more control and becoming a leader even in the face of his fear – which is what I feel makes a true hero.James Rollins weaves a tale and puts together a story that captures your attention from the first word to the last. I am looking forward to the next Jake Ransom adventure!!

⭐ This was my first James Rollins novel, and yes I read it out of sequence. However, I am a lover of ancient artifacts, cultures, mysticism, mystery, and fantasy, whether it is a YA novel or not.Mr. Rollins was recommended to me by a dear friend, who is also an author and I must say I was not disappointed. From start to finish, it was a delightful, action packed, read that was well researched. The idea of parallel worlds and time not being linear, but instead circular appeals to me. Because I found the book so enjoyable, I have bought a second James Rollins book and foresee that I will be adding to my collection as time goes by.I absolutely recommend this book for the many facets of history, adventure, and mystery that make up this terrific story.

⭐ Bought this book because I collect James Rollins writings that I like very much. I enjoyed reading this very much, even though it is written for young teenagers. Great narrative and great adventure.

⭐ When I discovered that one of my favorite authors had also written some books for teens, I had to get them to introduce my grandson to a great adventure story writer. This book picks up where “Skull King’s Shadow” left off. I don’t think the characters in this book are as well developed as they were in the first book, but it was still a good read. I hope he’s writing another Jake Ransom book. (By the way, I love that James Rollins and Jake Ransom have the same initials.)

⭐ good book

⭐ I’m an adult and I totally got into this young adult series! It’s very well written and the characters are very well-rounded!

⭐ Good continuation of the Jake Ransom saga. Filled with excitement, mystery and Intrigue. The journeys of the 5 friends bound through keep one on their toes. Developing romance between them will be much looked for in future releases. Can’t wait for next in series. Been 5 years. Hopefully soon
