Description
When a mysterious envelope arrives for Jake Ransom, he and his older sister, Kady, are plunged into a gripping chain of events. An artifact found by their parents—on the expedition from which they never returned—leads Jake and Kady to a strange world inhabited by a peculiar mix of long-lost civilizations, a world that may hold the key to their parents’ disappearance.
But even as they enter the gate to this extraordinary place, savage grackyls soar across the sky, diving to attack. Jake’s new friends, the pretty Mayan girl Marika and the Roman Pindor, say the grackyls were created by an evil alchemist—the Skull King. And as Jake struggles to find a way home, it becomes obvious that what the Skull King wants most is Jake and Kady—dead or alive.
User’s Reviews
Review “Last, but certainly not least, James Rollins has decided to dominate more than just the adult thriller field…Rollins has taken his love of Indiana Jones and made it fresh and fun for the younger set.” –Jeff Ayers, Author Magazine From the Author About James RollinsJAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins’ knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his “roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel’s science, history and geography.” Rollins’ rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that “After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man.”NPR calls his work “adventurous and enormously engrossing…” and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: “If you’re a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large….All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker.”The Story Teller’s StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James’ travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing “seminars.” James’ mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King’s Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.) From the Inside Flap When a mysterious envelope arrives for Jake Ransom, he and his older sister, Kady, are plunged into a gripping chain of events. And as Jake struggles to find a way home, it becomes obvious that what the Skull King wants most is Jake and Kady–dead or alive.Blockbuster author of The Judas Strain and The Last Oracle, James Rollins brings all the twists and chills he’s famous for to this breathlessly paced adventure-his first book about Jake Ransom. Fans of Indiana Jones, Alex Rider, and Maximum Ride will flock to this explosively entertaining adventure.”For Jake, I saved my wildest and best adventure of all.”James Rollins and his new protagonist, Jake Ransom, share many of the same passions. The author’s interest in archaeology led him to amas his own Cabinet of Curiosities, which includes a 100,000-year-old mammoth tusk from China. His New York Times bestselling books include The Last Oracle, The Judas Strain, and Black Order. James has a doctorate in veterinary medicine and his own practice in Sacramento, California. An Amateur spelunker and certified scuba enthusiast, he’ll often be found either underground or underwater.
Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:
⭐ At first I felt the story to be told for teenagers, and would make an excellent candidate for Marvel comics. This is not disparagement, but rather a comment about my surprise since it is so different from the James Rollins books I had read prior. In fact, I found the introduction of so many sciences and much ancient history, cleverly wound together, to be a wonderful intro to these things in the classroom. But in the last chapters the delightful surprise contained therein raised the story to a more mature level, and excellent finish. Of course this is just my opinion.
⭐ This story is about a boy named Jake and how he held us all here for ransom! Even though there is no such animal as a brontosaurus, their were avian reptiles that, indeed, had teeth! The book was creative home travel with a mix of different cultures that reminded me of the river world series
⭐ This was not the adult book I hoped for, but it was entertaining and pulled me into the story. It is probably more focused towards the younger generation, but it was still fun to read. You will want to collect the second book called “The Howling Sphinx” to keep up with the saga. Have fun!!!
⭐ This first book in the Jake Ransom series sets the stage for subsequent books but stands firmly on its own. The characters – like all of James Rollins’ characters – are believable and three dimensional. The story moves quickly with enough background and world building to let the reader visualize the setting vividly. I can’t wait to read the next book!
⭐ WELL AT FIRST I WONDERED HOW OLD THESE CHILDREN WOULD BE BY THE END OF THE STORY, BUT I WAS GLAD TO FIND OUT THAT THIS IS THE START OF A NEW SERIES. I ENJOYED IT AS MUCH AS ALL HIS OTHERS AND SO MUCH THAT I WILL GIVE IT TO MY 10 YEAR OLD GRANDSON TO READ. I REALLY THINK MY GRANDSON WILL LIKE IT, BECAUSE HE IS LIKE MOST KIDS AND LIKES DINO’S. I JUST GAVE HIM A GREAT COPY OF THE ILLUSTRATED TOM SAWYER FOR TEENS, WHICH ALONG WITH THIS BOOK I THINK YOU HAVE A HIT.I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT BOOK THE END ARRIL 2010, “JAKE RANSOM AND THE HOWLING SPHINX”.I ALSO READ CLIVE CUSSLER, VINCE FLYNN, JOE BUFF, MICHAEL DiMERCRIO, PARTRICK ROBINSON, ROBERT LUDLUM, DAN BROWN, AND MICHAEL CRICHTON.
⭐ I always enjoy James Rollins books, but the Jake Ransom series are written for young adults. They can be fun to read, but are not as enjoyable as his other books.
⭐ After being slightly disappointed in the latest adult Sigma Force thriller The Doomsday Key: A Novel (Sigma Force Novels) and being ignorant of James Clemen’s books this was a refreshing surprise. Homages to elements found in other books for children of all ages are referenced yet none of them overpower Jake Ransom (Rollin’s) new universe. If you like Harry Potter Boxset Books 1-7 , Dinotopia (TV Miniseries) , The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: 100th Anniversary Edition (Books of Wonder) ,or Stargate SG-1: The Complete Series Collection you’ll feel right at home in Calypsos.
⭐ Let me say first of all that I am a Rollins fan. While I liked the characters of Jake and Kady I was a little disappointed the way Rollins introduced a hodge podge of different lost civilizations in one place and the reason they were there. The big battle scene at the end seemed to be missing something, maybe it just was not quite suspenseful enough and the antagonist (Skull King) really wasn’t that scary. One of my favorite things that Rollins did was the use of Mayan symbols, modern technology mixed with the fantasy world and the explanation of how things reacted better. With that said I will continue to read to my boys about the young adventurer Jake and his sister.
⭐ I am so use to reading your thrillers that I wasn’t sure what I was reading or who was writing this book. I had to look at who was tho author to make sure I was reading Mr. Rollins. I didn’t read that he was writing a new kind of series so I was reading blind. The fourth chapter I was hooked and by the end I was looking for when was the next book coming out then found out it was a new book and all the rest of the information. Well Mr Rollins your chance really paid off. It’s a winner. Well done
⭐ Jake Ransom and his sister Kady are transported into a world filled with ancient civilizations, dinosaurs and mythical creatures. Following in the footsteps of their parents, Jake and Kady attempt to figure out where they are and how to get home. This book was jam packed, sometimes almost too much so. A reader could get lost with the references to mythology, ancient history and a sort of physics. I liked the main characters and think that this could be a good book for a strong boy reader. I read this book on my Kindle.[…]
