Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins’ knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his “roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel’s science, history and geography.” Rollins’ rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that “After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man.”NPR calls his work “adventurous and enormously engrossing…” and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: “If you’re a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large….All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker.”The Story Teller’s StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James’ travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing “seminars.” James’ mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King’s Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.) From the Inside Flap Nationally bestselling author James Rollins has transported readers to the dark heart of the Amazon, the bowels of the earth, far below the ocean, and the top of the world. Now he embarks upon his most gripping and terrifying adventure yet: to a nightmare buried beneath a treacherous desert wasteland.SANDSTORMAn inexplicable explosion rocks the antiquities collection of a London museum-a devastating blast that sets off alarms in clandestine organizations around the world, as the race begins to determine how it happened, why it happened, and what it means.Lady Kara Kensington’s family paid a high price in money and blood to found the gallery that now lies in ruins. And her search for answers is about to lead Kara and her friend Safia al-Maaz, the gallery’s brilliant and beautiful curator, into a world they never dreamed actually existed. For new evidence exposed by the tragedy suggests that Ubar, a lost city buried beneath the Arabian desert, is more than mere legend…and that something astonishing is waiting there. Two extraordinary women and their guide, the international adventurer Omaha Dunn, are not the only ones being drawn to the desert. Former U.S. Navy SEAL Painter Crowe, a covert government operative and head of an elite counterespionage team, is hunting down a dangerous turncoat, Crowe’s onetime partner, to retrieve the vital information she has stolen. And the trial is pointing him toward Ubar. But the many perils inherent in a death-defying trek deep into the savage heart of the Arabian Peninsula pale before the nightmarish secrets to be unearthed at journey’s end. What is hidden below the sand is more than a valuable relic of ancient history. It is an ageless power that lives and breathes-an awesome force that could create a utopia or tear down everything humankind has build during millennia of civilisation. Many lives have already been destroyed by ruthless agencies dedicated to guarding its mysteries and harnessing its might. aAnd now the endy may be at hand for Safia, for kara, for Crowe, and for all the interlopers who wish to expose its mysteries, as it prepares to unleash the most terrible storm of all.

⭐ The creativity of some writers absolutely blows me away and “James Rollins” is at the top of the list. Love the way he weaves historical facts, happenings, places etc. into a novel for today. Have trouble putting the book down and doing things I should be doing, feed the cats, clean, cook etc. I can’t wait for each new book to come out. For me as well I’ve been to some of these “far away” places and seen some of them which adds another dimension for me.He is always at the top of his game, no missteps for this author.
⭐ This author is the best I’ve come across in the genre. If you take Dan Brown x Dan Brown, you still are an order of magnitude off. While I found myself going to Wiki while reading two of Dan’s Books recovering from surgery, I polished off this 715 pages– 115 pages the first day, the next 600 in the following two days. I found myself researching and learning so much about Biblical history, Oman, and aspects of Arabic culture of which I had no inkling. The science is interesting, and what DARPA does who only knows. Sigma Force Seals with PhDs indeed. Enjoyable.
⭐ Being a fan of Indiana Jones, historical mysteries and all things mystical, I actually did a Google search for “Dan Brown but good.” James Rollins was one of the names that came up. I took a chance on book one of the Sigma Force series.Good stuff. The second book is even better. I would like to rate this 4.5 stars, but it isn’t available, so it gets 5!Rollins is well-researched and a skillful storyteller. These are page turners!Immediately after finishing Sandstorm, I bought book two, Map of Bones. Done with that one now and moving on to book 3. I don’t have a lot of time to read, so finishing two books, a total of about 1200 pages in about 6 weeks is darn good for me. That’s because these books are so entertaining.Mysteries, great plot development, twists, and science combine to make James Rollins books some of my new favorites!
⭐ I love this author’s writing, and I leap through his books. I just realized I’ve been reading them out of sequence and so I decided to get the first one. I have no doubt it will be just as good as the others I’ve read, but my issue comes with the shipping. I recieved my books (I ordered something else too) in a padded envelope and with this particular book the entire front cover was folded in half when I pulled it from the packaging. Props to Amazon’s customer service as always though for listening to my issue and resolving everything with one phone call. Thanks folks! Also yes, you should read this book cause this author is captivating.
⭐ I bought this as I was looking for something different than the “out there” stuff I normally read. I was not disappointed. The story flows well. I love that his books take real life and put minor twists and humor to them. There are explanations of where his material comes from and what is true and what is not (or is it! haha!). I love this series and am extremely happy that there are many books in this series that I can dive into. Highly recommend.
⭐ My first Rollins book admittedly left me with mixed feelings. The scientific aspects were simply astounding and well thought out, which in my opinion formed the crux of the matter (anti?). Any book/tale such as this is going to roll in unstoppable action as a prerequisite, and in this the author succeeds quite well. Characterization is certainly above par–if perhaps a tad TOO noble. The background was done nicely, but the shadowy “evil” alterior organization was rampant with cliches–as if it existed solely for that purpose. The real thorn however, was the ever-present & over-used romantic angles which only served to slow down the pace and quite frankly, make this reviewer nauseous…otherwise putting a damper on a relatively lively read.
⭐ The Good Stuff:It was well written. The transitions flowed well. The demise of the antagonist was skillfully executed. The Issues:At one point, when talking about the glass bubble cavern underneath the desert during the sandstorm, they said, “Glass is an excellent conductor of electricity.” Common knowledge says otherwise, but IF they were referring to “molten glass”, or glass with impurities, then my experiments with “conducting glass” would support the statement of glass being a good conductor…but I don’t think that’s what they meant since the glass didn’t become molten until AFTER the electrical discharges made contact. After the antagonist was taken care of at the end, everything just wrapped up nice and neatly – yet, I was fairly sure that there were many more soldiers back at the base in Shishur who, not knowing their leader had been terminated, would have still attacked the protagonist party after they exited Ubar.
⭐ It’s clear right from the start that this book requires you to suspend your disbelief, but doing so results in a fulfilling adventure into the sands of Oman with a delightfully engaging cast of characters and a multidimensional villain. There were plenty of plot twists and a love triangle to keep the reader hooked. I look forward to reading more from this series.
⭐ 4.5 STARS!I really liked this novel. A close friend suggested it and I decided to take a chance. James Rollins combines the best traits of science fiction and fantasy, giving scientific, modern day reasons to rationalize mystical occurrences in the book. I really enjoyed that. Most of all, I loved the characters and their realistic personas. I thoroughly enjoyed Painter Crowe, and hope to see him in future novels by this author. I loved Saffy, and I loved Omaha. I cheered for him to make things right with her. Enjoyed the gritty fight scenes and action immensely. That’s the positive, now here’s the negative. While I enjoyed the technological melding of fantasy and science, sometimes I felt as if it flew over my head. That isn’t why I dropped a star. I had a real problem with how quickly Painter fell in love and believed the sudden love triangle detracted from the amazing story going on here. Otherwise, this is a fantastic read.
⭐ Great start to this novel. Reminiscent of early Indiana Jones. The adventure becomes mired in fake scientific jargon that detracts from the conflict. Poor climax and conclusion.
