Description
On a transatlantic flight, the two black sheep of Sigma Force–Seichan and Kowalski–must set aside their mutual dislike as a mysterious fiery force knocks their aircraft out of the sky. This unlikely duo must use every skill, weapon, and bit of ingenuity to survive a night on a remote volcanic island, where their only refuge is the haunted, bat-plagued grounds of a seemingly deserted resort. But something horrific awaits the two, something born of the latest science but rooted in our basest human instincts. To survive they will need to learn to work together–but even then, it may be too late.
Included with this short story is a sneak peek at The Seventh Plague, which raises the question: If the biblical plagues of Egypt truly happened, could they happen again? The frightening answer: Yes.

From the Author About James RollinsJAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins’ knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his “roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel’s science, history and geography.” Rollins’ rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that “After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man.”NPR calls his work “adventurous and enormously engrossing…” and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: “If you’re a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large….All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker.”The Story Teller’s StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James’ travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing “seminars.” James’ mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King’s Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.) From the Inside Flap New York Times bestselling author James Rollins comes a shocking short story, where a chance mishap leads to the discovery of a weapon like no other in . . . ⭐ I just finished reading Crash and Burn by New York Times bestselling author James Rollins. This short story is number 11.5 in the Sigma Force series. It involves the Team Sigma outsiders – our prodigal soldier boy, Joe Kowalski and the mysterious and lethal, Seichan. So excited that these two get the short stories to extoll their talents and get the opportunity to shine on their own. This is a fast paced, thrilling and terrifying story. Forced to crash land their plane on a remote island in the Azores after a debilitating malfunction, Seichan and Joe fight with what resources they have at hand to survive. Come with Joe and Seichan as they undertake a 12 hour battle against pure evil. This story content will truly scare the bejesus out of you.In reference to Jim’s remarks in the “What’s True, What’s Not” section – No, I don’t think you’re wrong (just don’t aim it at me). As to the Azores – My bags are packed. Just let me know what flight to book. This short story also contained the prologue and first chapter of the new Sigma Novel, The Seventh Plague, being published December 13, 2016. So glad to see a sorely missed friend from an earlier storyline returning. This release can’t come fast enough!
⭐ Crash and Burn by James Rollins is a short story or novelette in the Sigma Force series. While most of the Sigma Force members are former Special Forces soldiers, Seichan and Kowalski are the ‘outsiders’. Seichan is a former assassin and Kowalski had been a navy seaman. They are on a transatlantic flight when something happens and their jet goes down. What follows is a suspenseful action-adventure story that is a fight for survival.Due to how short this story is, there isn’t much time for character depth. However, you do see some in Seichan. There is plenty of action and descriptions of weapons as one expects in a Rollins novel. There was not a lot of dialogue, but some banter occurred between the two main characters. The plot is tense and suspenseful, with a dramatic over-the-top ending.Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was an entertaining book that grabbed my attention and didn’t let go. This is the 17th book/novelette that I have read by this author and I own four more that I am looking forward to reading.Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and are not biased in any way.

⭐ Crash and Burn is…well…umm…short. I know. I know. It is a novella, so I should expect it to be short, but even though there was plenty of action which one expects from a James Rollins book, it seems to end even before it got started. I almost got the feeling that this was a scene that Rollins really liked, but couldn’t figure out how to place it in one of his novels. Rollins puts two divergent characters, Seichan and Joe Kowalski, together in an unplanned mission where both are dependent on the other to not only to save themselves, but to thwart a group of evil madmen from developing and using a rather disturbing piece of technology.Rollins had a great opportunity to have some entertaining bantering between Seichan and Kowalski, and even though there was some of that, I really feel that opportunity was lost. The interactions between these two could have made Crash and Burn a real page-turner, but instead it is a rather ho-hum adventure.
⭐ I just thought the entire story was a little too much to buy into. Kowalski and Seichan’s plane crashes onto an island where they and the pilot all survive but the pilot’s brain goes haywire which noticeably changes his behavior. The duo makes their way to the resort to find the guests acting the same way. From there, the plot pretty much pulls the reader around by the nose without letting him appreciate the moment. The two lead characters find themselves getting dropped into every crisis in this short novella. Perhaps if the story had been told in a typical “Rollins-length” size, I could’ve really gotten into it. The author has done great in describing the how’s and why’s in his full length novels but not this one. Lots of action but very little thought.
⭐ I am a huge James Rollins fan. The Sigma Force books are my favorites, and I quickly order and read them as soon as they become available. This short story doesn’t disappoint. It is devoted to two of the main characters from the Sigma Force world, helping to develop their characters more. You see more inside the mind and workings of Joe Kowalski and Seichan than in any of the.books. I am not going to discuss the story, I will let you read and enjoy It for yourself. The story can easily stand alone, but works well to blend with the entire series. I highly recommend this short story!
⭐ On a transatlantic flight, SIGMA Force agents Seichan and Kowalski survive a fiery force which knocks their plane out of the air. They survive the night in the forest on a volcanic island. On the island is a large resort hotel, still under construction, but open. However, the agents find it empty and haunting. There are bodies laying everywhere, but they only seem to be in a coma. There is a new horrific scientific study going on here, and Seichan and Kowalski will have to work together if they are to survive. As always, James Rollins certainly knows how to captivate his readers with mystery, action, and good writing. Highly recommend to readers who have not become familiar with Rollins’ novels.
⭐ Rollins does it again! While a short story.. it is a smash’em up, knock’em down thriller! Two of my favorite characters.. Seichan and Kowalski are tossed together in an adventure of survival. They really don’t care for one another.. but, they easily set aside their differences to take on a savage group who is using a new weapon that no one has ever heard of.. much less had used against them. The short story is an introduction to Rollins upcoming release, ‘The Seventh Plague’ which promises to be a must have book to read over Christmas vacation. If you can set it aside for that long! It will be available for purchase on December 13th, 2016!! Ohhhhhh.. Santa.. Please sneak me an early copy!!
⭐ As much as I love James Rollins I will say I did hesitate to purchase this novella because I’m normally not a novella fan. I am glad I did so though. While short I didn’t feel cheated. I felt like I got a story that had a start, middle and end that made sense and flowed from beginning to end smoothly. It wrapped up nicely enough that I wasn’t frustrated with it being so short. It also helped that I love both Seichan and Kowalski so it was nice seeing them again especially with the two being so different from one another. I cannot wait to read The Seventh Plague!
⭐ Good. Needed to be fleshed out and made into a book.I wanted to know more about both weapons. Also , were other scientists involved? Let’s have a book exploring the possibilities of covert operations using both weapons. Possibly altering Collasus to enhance intelligence. Could have unexpected results, especially if compassion pandering other “good” emotions were not enhanced.Liked the story but it left me wanting more.
