Description
The daughter of a wealthy and influential Charleston family has been missing on Mt Everest for three years. Presumed dead, her remains had been irretrievable until an earthquake caused her body to move down the mountain.
The family want only one person to identify her remains: Tempe Brennan.
Though reluctant to take the case, Tempe soon realises that the girl did not die of natural causes. It seems the victim was murdered and all her fellow climbers fall under suspicion.
But which one is the killer? And if Tempe gets too close to the truth, will they kill again?
Also gives readers the first chance to read the opening chapters of Kathy’s highly anticipated new Temperance Brennan novel, Speaking in Bones, out in July.
User’s Reviews
Kathy Reichs is the author of eighteen New York Times bestselling novels featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Like her protagonist, Reichs is a forensic anthropologist—one of fewer than one hundred ever certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. A professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, she is a former vice president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and serves on the National Police Services Advisory Council in Canada. Reichs’s own life, as much as her novels, is the basis for the TV show Bones, one of the longest-running series in the history of the FOX network. –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

⭐ This is a well written interesting story until the climax.Spoiler. Why would an experienced, highly intelligent woman who works with the police decide to confront an athletic man in an isolated spot, instead of having him brought in for questioning? She allows a man she is almost certain has pushed a young woman off a cliff to lead her to a spot with a drop off where they cannot be seen and then confronts him with a crime. Well surprise, something bad happens. This plot point just pushes the boundary beyond forgiveness. In so called cozy mysteries the idiotic heroine often wonders into danger. But for an experienced forensic professional with years of experience collaborating with law enforcement to behave like this indicates a death wish. There is only one predictable result. The guy is going to hurt her. Why, why would a female writer make her brilliant scientific heroine, who regularly works with law enforcement act so dumb. Why?I have read several books in this series. They are usually worth reading. But now I can only draw one conclusion. The bone lady wants to die.
⭐ This is a frightening look into the quest for Mt. Everest. In Kathy Reichs inimitable style we get to learn about the hazards of climbing the worlds highest peaks. When a local big wig has her daughter’s body recovered from a failed expedition and insists on Tempe identifying her and finding cause of death politics make it so she can’t refuse. We are swept into the world of extreme conditions and as with all the Temperance Brennan books nothing is as it seems. This is one heck of a great read.
⭐ Short little story, where Ryan is completely absent and Temperance runs too many risks. Fascinating information about the world of Climbing and the mountains where corpse are left frozen.
⭐ When forensic anthropologist Dr Temperance Brennan was called in by her boss to examine and identify a body retrieved from the “death zone” on Mount Everest, she had no idea the simple task would turn into a complicated and complex one. A recent earthquake and avalanche had sent bodies tumbling down and into an area which was safe for retrieval. The area called the “death zone” at the top of Mount Everest meant any unfortunate persons who passed away had to be left there as the danger was immense. Many bodies remained at the summit, frozen where they fell…As Tempe’s investigation deepened, the anomalies she discovered sent shivers down her spine. She talked with the fellow climbers of the victim and found them to be reticent and hostile. Were they hiding something? The body and the bones were shedding their secrets – what would Tempe find? The truth? Or would it remain hidden?Kathy Reichs has done it again! Bones on Ice is a novella, but with the usual style and humour which is the author’s trademark. Filled with mystery, suspense and intrigue; the usual excellent characters – all in this story, plus a preview to Speaking in Bones, which is due for publication toward the end of July 2015. Highly recommended.
⭐ Bones on Ice is a novella in the Temperance Brennan series by popular American author, Kathy Reichs. The well-connected Hallis family matriarch insists that Tempe conduct the post mortem on her daughter, whose remains are uncovered after the Nepal earthquake. Brighton Hallis died whilst scaling Mt Everest some three years previously, and her remains were unrecoverable at the time. Tempe finds many things she would expect after three years of exposure to freezing temperatures. But she also finds the unexpected, and her contact with Bright’s climbing companions raises more questions than it answers. In amongst the suspense and intrigue, Reichs manages to include lots of interesting facts about deaths on Everest, hypothermia and the bizarre associated behaviours, the effects of altitude and temperature on decay and preservation of a corpse, obtaining prints from dehydrated fingers and the effects of freezing on dentition. With its preview of the next book, Speaking in Bones, this is an excellent small dose of Tempe Brennan.
⭐ As are all Kathy Reichs’ books, “Bones on Ice” was inspired by a true account of death and danger. This time, the danger is the death zone of Mount Everest where the bodies of over 200 climbers remain frozen indefinitely. As the story starts, forensic anthropologist, Tempe Brennan, receives a frozen corpse identified as that of Brighton Hallis whose wealthy mother is a friend of both the mayor and the police chief. An avid mountain climber, “Bright” had organized an unguided climb of Mr. Everest and was the only one unaccounted for at base camp by the end of the climb. Did she freeze to death, or was she murdered before she froze? These and other questions are answered in the remaining pages which are full of unexpected twists and turns. The book is dedicated to all those who perished in the Nepal earthquakes of April 25, 2015 and May 12, 2015. In her author’s note, Reichs includes links to organizations dedicated to improving the lives of the Sherpa many of whom die in these dangerous climbs. In just 117 pages, the reader is treated to a riveting thriller while also learning about the culture of mountaineering.
⭐ I really enjoyed this novella and read it because my mom is a fan of Kathy Reichs books and I figured a novella would give me an idea of how this author writes and whether I liked the subject matter (forensic anthropology), without investing in a full book. (I know, I’m frugal). That being said, I really enjoyed the storyline, the suspense, and the writing style. The character (Temperance) has a great sense of humor, I got a kick out of her (thought bubbles… ), and yet was intelligent and professional. It wasn’t cheesy, not violent (there were some suspenseful parts, but nothing horrifically gory), and there were definitely times where I could not put the (Kindle) down. Great intro for me to this author and I’ll definitely be embarking on her entire series, starting with Book 1.
⭐ This is a mystery steeped in a great deal of information about frozen bodies, hypothermia and info on Everest. So if you’ve not read any of the detailed true stories of Mt. Everest or other climbs, this will give you a good look at what can happens at extreme heights in extreme weather. As always, Reich is a snappy writer, current with her scientific info and settings. Because it’s a novella, the reader doesn’t get quite the suspense of Reich’s usual books but there is still enough suspense to keep reading.
⭐ The forensics involved in this case are fascinating. One of the reasons I enjoy Kathy Reichs’ books is because of the Science. The “foul play” of this story is unlike any of her other stories and that kept my interest. She explains the Science without our feeling we are being talked down to as a general rule. It just seemed this case was a bit slow getting started. Usually when I start one of her books I will read voraciously until completed. This one took a bit longer even though a shorter read. Nevertheless, I would recommend it to her fans. It will not disappoint.
⭐ This was one of the quickest reads I’ve had with Dr Brennan. As always her humor and sarcasm (which rivals my own) takes me away from current reality (pandemic). Thanks again Dr Brennan for taking me away
