Description

“Fans of TV’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation should be in heaven” (People) stepping into the world of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan—she works with the dead, but she works for the living.

“Down time” is not a phrase in Tempe Brennan’s vocabulary. A string of disturbing cases has put her vacation plans on hold; instead, she heads to the lab to analyze charred remains from a suspicious fire, and a mysterious black residue from a small plane crash. But most troubling of all are the bones. Even more disturbing is the fact that bones turns up on a family picnic in North Carolina—but are they animal or human? X-rays and DNA may link the crimes, but they can’t reveal who is closing in on Tempe and her family. And how far they will go to keep her from uncovering the truth?

User’s Reviews

Sunday Tribune (U.K.) Scalpel-sharp….Suspense-filled. About the Author Kathy Reichs’s first novel Déjà Dead, published in 1997, won the Ellis Award for Best First Novel and was an international bestseller. Cold, Cold Bones is Kathy’s twenty-first entry in her series featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Kathy was also a producer of Fox Television’s longest running scripted drama, Bones, which is based on her work and her novels. One of very few forensic anthropologists certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, Kathy divides her time between Charlotte, North Carolina, and Montreal, Québec. Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ Actually, I didn’t find this as good as previous books, though the individual plots were good. Its not unusual, at all, to find Dr. Brennan having a couple cases going on at the same time. I felt too much going on in this particular book. It spread itself in too many directions. Add to that, Dr. Brennan finding herself in serious peril, at one point, just became too much. I found myself skimming over sections, which I hadn’t done in previous works. It seemed just too much going on and too wordy.Add to that, Dr, Brennan’s romantic interest. The doctor is a well-educated anthropologist and consummate professional. She’s involved with this cop who is completely annoying at best and a complete mis-match with her. He likes to talk like a cowboy of old. (Give me a break), and has the cheesiest, corniest jokes and overall sense of humor. Put these two in real life and there would be absolutely nothing she sees in this yahoo. Ms. Reichs, please dump this Ryan character.Looking forward to the next installment in the series.

⭐ I stumbled upon Reich years ago first with a book on cassette (yup) from a liquidators. I enjoyed the story, the main character, Tempe and whole setting, anthropology/forensic professor splits time between NC and Canada. I enjoy her spunk and her tenacity. It took me years later to return to actually reading her books. I have enjoyed all of them so far.

⭐ Full disclosure. As I have stated in previous reviews of Kathy Reichs’ books I am an unabashed fan. To the point once I started reading the series I discovered that the Temperance Brennen in the books was a far more interesting and multi-faceted character than the one in the “Bones” tv series. Bare Bones did nothing to change my opinion. When you have the author who is a forensic anthropologists, one of the few in the country, that writes on how this impacts the criminal investigation process you have a winner. Plus, she is a wonderful writer. Great Read.

⭐ I love this series of books. I’ve been reading books series since I was a little girls — Happy Hollisters, Bobsey Twins, Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames…. 🙂 These mysteries are fairly light reading, entertaining, forensics and anthropology are interesting to me. I enjoy the author’s descriptions of the locations, and a little bit of romance is thrown in for the main character.

⭐ Superlative descriptors cannot capture the joy of reading Kathy Reichs . Bare Bones lays bare a world of details without losing the big pictures of wildlife and drug smuggling around the planet and here in our back yards. Every mystery novel since Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson puzzled out the clues to solve the crimes, all my favorite authors have prepared the way for Temperance Brennan. Reichs has found the way to educate me further in major ways. I love her integrative progression and surprise twists, the feeling of being present as an observer at her elbow in the labs and the field. The one word to associate with her literary style is yet to be coined…

⭐ I love Kathy Reich’s novels and am sure I would love this too if it were an audio book that I thought I ordered and paid for. The 1star rating is for Amazon service, sorry.

⭐ I had just finished reading DEADLY DECISIONS by Kathy Reichs and was looking forward to reading BARE BONES, but it was kind of late at night and I thought: :Well, I can start this tomorrow.” then after reading the back cover 5 or 6 times I decided to just start it, read a chapter or two and then get into it for real the next day. The next thing I knew I thought I should go to bed because I had to work the next day and I was on page 183. Holy smokes!!! This is the third book I’ve read in the Temperance Brennan series and I just ordered 3 more. Every one of these novels move along at a brisk pace. BARE BONES again has Tempe discovering bones where they shouldn’t be and begins to unravel a mystery, This one has plenty of plot twists and a few times I thought I had it figured out just to find (as Tempe did too) that I was wrong. Again in this book, Brennan is required to work with a detective that she does not particularly like but again softens her opinion of him by the end of the story, showing that she too can be wrong. Oh yeah, Andrew Ryan is again on hand as the love interst. Another good plot by Reichs makes this an easy one to recommend. Can’t wait to start the next one.

⭐ Not her best novel, too much going on . Tried to cover crop much. Confusing. Took fifty pages of explaining after story over

⭐ Tempe and Ryan are trying to get away on a vacation in Charlette when the bones keep popping up in the strangest places.

⭐ Although the plots of Reich’s novels are excellent – they twist and turn and always surprise – the structure of each novel is formulaic, they are almost all identical – massive amounts of scientific information sandwiched in between plot twists, followed by predictable actions, and verbal responses that are practically identical from book to book. Although I continue to read each new book Iam now just skimming for portions that are different from the previous ones and the latest one took a single sitting to to read because of this – no longer good value for what I paid..
