Keith Devery, burdened with a criminal record, arrives in Wicksteed, a prosperous little town on the Pacific coast. He is looking for any job that will provide eating money. It is when he meets Beth Marshall – whose husband, a local drunk, is to inherit $1,000,000 – that he realises there’s a way to get back in the big league.
Together they ruthlessly plot the perfect murder, but Keith soon finds himself at the centre of a double-bluff. Beth has plans of her own once the money is hers …
User’s Reviews
Born Rene Brabazon Raymond in London, the son of a British colonel in the Indian Army, James Hadley Chase was educated at King’s School in Rochester, Kent, and left home at the age of 18. He initially worked in book sales until, inspired by the rise of gangster culture during the Depression and by reading James M. Cain’s The Postman Always Rings Twice, he wrote his first novel, No Orchids for Miss Blandish. Despite the American setting of many of his novels, Chase (like Peter Cheyney, another hugely successful British noir writer) never lived there, writing with the aid of maps and a slang dictionary. He had phenomenal success with the novel, which continued unabated throughout his entire career, spanning 45 years and nearly 90 novels. His work was published in dozens of languages and over thirty titles were adapted for film. He served in the RAF during World War II, where he also edited the RAF Journal. In 1956 he moved to France with his wife and son; they later moved to Switzerland, where Chase lived until his death in 1985. –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.
Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:
⭐ Great style of writing. Hooks you from the first page and very hard to put down till the very end. A great thriller.
⭐ It was good shape
⭐ Typical Chase novel – racy, charming and tautly written – missed this for so long and got this managed after a good deal of search. Realized that this is such a worthy wait.
⭐ This is a touch of a genius. Kept me spellbound. Expertly written and kept simple. Made it unputdownable from start to finish. Left me guessing for a closure. What a stroke of genius. It is another nice one from James Hadley Chase.
⭐ Not original publication. Like Penguin. Cheap quality
⭐ The book cover is fake and you would get a poor and cheap version of it.The novel is otherwise good.
⭐ Received in good condition
⭐ I have searched for this title for a long time ago and got this in Amazon.Shubhadutt.
