Born Rene Brabazon Raymond in London, the son of a British colonel in the Indian Army, James Hadley Chase was educated at King’s School in Rochester, Kent, and left home at the age of 18. He initially worked in book sales until, inspired by the rise of gangster culture during the Depression and by reading James M. Cain’s The Postman Always Rings Twice, he wrote his first novel, No Orchids for Miss Blandish. Despite the American setting of many of his novels, Chase (like Peter Cheyney, another hugely successful British noir writer) never lived there, writing with the aid of maps and a slang dictionary. He had phenomenal success with the novel, which continued unabated throughout his entire career, spanning 45 years and nearly 90 novels. His work was published in dozens of languages and over thirty titles were adapted for film. He served in the RAF during World War II, where he also edited the RAF Journal. In 1956 he moved to France with his wife and son; they later moved to Switzerland, where Chase lived until his death in 1985. –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

⭐ I always think of Helga Rolfe when I find myself in a tight corner – know thy enemy. This has helped and continues to give one the last ace. As a woman I never allow anyone to outsmart me nor show my fear. We all have her steel character but suppress it. This book is better than any motivational book that gives you the courage and strength to face yet another day in spite of the challenges and adversary that surround you.

⭐ Only the best from Hadley Chase!

⭐ The book set up the plot nicely. Lots of sudden twits in the tale. This story could have lasted longer since there are a lot of potential to elaborate on the story. I was disappointed that the story ended so soon.

⭐ A good book but very dated now, loved the twist involving the daughter at the end. Onto the last in the trilogy xxxx

⭐ The book lived up to my expectations and more. It’s got all the elements needed for a thriller. The twists and turns in the story kept me intrigued;add to that a bit of voodoo and you’ve got yourself a cracker of a book!Highly recommend this one by the one and only JHC!!

⭐ With a story so well told and thrill that lasted till the end, the ending surprised me and i could have clapped if i were watching a movie made from the novel. Damn! Mr. Chase what a rush.
