Description

This is the most comprehensive introductory graduate or advanced undergraduate text in fluid mechanics available. It builds up from the fundamentals, often in a general way, to widespread applications, to technology and geophysics. New to this second edition are discussions on the universal dimensions similarity scaling for the laminar boundary layer equations and on the generalized vector field derivatives. In addition, new material on the generalized streamfunction treatment shows how streamfunction may be used in three-dimensional flows. Finally, a new Computational Fluid Dynamics chapter enables compulations of some simple flows and provides entry to more advanced literature.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I bought this book as a more advanced introduction to Fluid Dynamics after I had already taken a course in Fluid Dynamics during my early undergraduate career (and forgotten a good amount of it). Particularly, I was interested in learning more about turbulent flow, shockwaves, detonation, and more advanced topics in Fluid Dynamics for a course in the theory of supernovae. This book excellently and thoroughly covers these topics both in a mathematically sound and excellent way, as well as well-describing the phenomenology behind the explained topics. The book is simply, excellent, and most of the reviewers have already commented on the advantages of having a book that references thermodynamics very early on, that has solved example problems, and it covers a huge breadth of topics in excellent detail.I would not recommend this textbook to an undergraduate trying to learn fluid dynamics for the first time, unless they were very thorough and advanced in their coursework (probably a senior or junior level undergraduate looking to go on to study physics in graduate school). Excellent reference, excellent pedagogical writing style. I cannot say anything bad about this book!

⭐Excellent reference book of classical fluid mechanics. Highly recommended text for graduate students of fluid/aerodynamics, fluid mechanicians and applied physicists.

⭐The book is often cited by other authors of fluid mechanics and explosion/shock wave work which is why I bought it. It makes a great reference book, yet is probably not the best choice for an introductory course. It is very complete in its development of topics and the problems/examples are all solved in straight forward approaches.

⭐Landau was the master of Russian physics, his collection of books is fantastic. I have all his books in Italian language, but this one was never translated, so I bought it in English. Great book!

⭐It is the book on fluid mechanics I’ve enjoyed the most. It covers a wide range of subjects (ideal and viscous fluids, gas dynamics, turbulence, mass and heat transport, sound etc) in deep connection with thermodynamics.I’ve read Volume 5 as well and they make a good match of two masterpieces.

⭐It is giving me an insight on the background of fluid mechanics with the flavor of physics that I need in a book. Very good!

⭐I ordered this as a supplemental text for a class I’m taking and I was wary about the fact its paperback. But it arrived quickly and wrapped in plastic with the other textbook I purchased. It was packaged in plastic and wasn’t bent or folded.

⭐Difficult and dense, but worth it.

⭐I’m a university researched in fluid dynamics, and this is the first book I go to when I need to look something up. It covers everything from the basics to more advanced topics I’ve been unable to find elsewhere (like for example the equations for a compressible viscous fluid). It’s style is very straightforward and to the point. It’s so good that, when I lost my previous copy, I had to buy another one.

⭐Very mathematical book but still good.

⭐Favourite book from Phd years, glad to own it at last.

⭐Very good.

⭐Anche se esistono libri più recenti sull’argomento , questo rimane un testo inprescindibile prer chi vuole avvicinarsi ai problemi della Fisica dei Fluidi.
