Description

A brilliant but sadistic safe-breaker; a beautiful seductress; an expert young hunter and an ace pilot with a shady past – this is the team that undercover operator Armo Shalik assembles to steal the priceless Borgia ring from millionaire Max Kahlenberg’s closely guarded fortress in the remote and deadly African bush.

But when Kahlenberg finds out they are coming, the gang’s expedition turns into a strictly one-way safari – to slaughter …

User’s Reviews

Born Rene Brabazon Raymond in London, the son of a British colonel in the Indian Army, James Hadley Chase was educated at King’s School in Rochester, Kent, and left home at the age of 18. He initially worked in book sales until, inspired by the rise of gangster culture during the Depression and by reading James M. Cain’s The Postman Always Rings Twice, he wrote his first novel, No Orchids for Miss Blandish. Despite the American setting of many of his novels, Chase (like Peter Cheyney, another hugely successful British noir writer) never lived there, writing with the aid of maps and a slang dictionary. He had phenomenal success with the novel, which continued unabated throughout his entire career, spanning 45 years and nearly 90 novels. His work was published in dozens of languages and over thirty titles were adapted for film. He served in the RAF during World War II, where he also edited the RAF Journal. In 1956 he moved to France with his wife and son; they later moved to Switzerland, where Chase lived until his death in 1985. –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

⭐ This is one of the vintage Chase classics. Although the background and topography are thin from modern standards, the plot is rich in human interaction and subtle twists. Chase keeps it gripping.

⭐ this is one of many James Hadley Chases stories and I love it

⭐ Too many typos for a classic. Insult to the author. Was there nothing like proofreading?

⭐ Full of suspense

⭐ Mr. Chase was a true master of the mystery genre. I have read about half of his books, and The Vulture Is a Patient Bird is my favorite among them. (The World in My Pocket is a close second.) There is no real crime in the story, so it is a little different from this author’s other books.A millionaire Max Kahlenberg, who lives a secluded life in the Dragon Mountains in South Africa, is in possession of the priceless and infamous Cesare Borgia’s poison ring that he has stolen from another art collector. The previous owner wants the ring back; therefore, four very different people are hired to retrieve it. An ex-model, a helicopter pilot, an African tour guide, and a safe/security specialist fly to Africa and set off on their task of entering Max’s well-guarded mansion and stealing the ring. It proves to be fairly easy for them to do so, but returning home with the ring is a totally different matter, for Max turns out to be adventurous, game-loving, and mad. Most of the story is set in South Africa, and the descriptions of the unassailable mountains and the impenetrable jungle with its different animals, smells, and sounds, as well as those of Max’s opulent estate and formidable Zulu warriors whom he uses as his guards, are vivid and colorful, yet brief. The characters are flawed, but they are real; the little twist with the ring is unexpected, and the ending is satisfying. If you are looking for a fast, easy, and action-packed read, look no further. I really enjoyed the book, and I hope you will, too.

⭐ Most of JHC’s books are worth reading. This is one of them. It is amazing how he thinks of so many unexpected twists and turns to the plot.

⭐ Excellent read with a good plot. An adventure story with suspense, intrigue and thrills. I enjoyed the old school way of writing. Surprised that this book has not been made into a film. Looking forward to reading more books by James Hadley Chase.

⭐ Fab

⭐ Having read the printed version, borrowed from a friend some thirty years back, the kindle version offered a chance to read this gripping story of CHASE. I enjoyed each page of the book. A typical James Hadley Chase novel will never disappoint you. I strongly recommend to people of all ages to read this and enjoy the nice story told in a typical CHASE manner

⭐ JAMES HADLEY CHASE IS TOO GREAT TO BE REVIEWED. HIS BOOKS ARE ICONIC
