User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Book arrived three days after being ordered, in perfect condition–if anything, better than “like new.” “Near fine” would be more accurate. This will be a wedding gift, and I will be proud to be offering it. A+++ transaction.

⭐I had read this was an incredible book. I didn’t research the book prior to buying it and so it surprised me that it was written in such a “textbook” style. (This was my fault) I am not a fan of that type of writing unfortunately. 🙂 That being said, I have still enjoyed reading it and it is very informative. If you are a Linguist, this book would be invaluable. Even though I am not a linguist and I don’t necessarily enjoy the writing style, I intend to keep the book and keep reading as the information is so interesting.

⭐Mencken demonstrates with many examples the spirited energy of American English with samples fromHemingway, Steinbeck and even Mark Twain. The myth of the the superiority of England’s version is exploded – it may have started to perish with Professor Henry Higgins’ soliloquy in “My Fair Lady”. Everybody who reads American authors should have a copy!

⭐We use American English to write. We use American English to speak. American English is the means by which half the world population communicates with each other. So why not spend a little time understanding how the American language came into being. How American English was scorned by England for so many years (and still to this day), and how American English eventually overpowered British English. After reading this book, and then stepping back to see the flow of history, you will surely discover the power of culture and its influence upon language, and vice versa. I think this is a must read for anyone who wishes to become a craftsman in the field of writing.

⭐Who am I to critique H.L. Mencken? This is an essential book for those really interested in words. I do have to stress “really”, since it is very detailed and not everyone cares about the history of a language. But if you do, this book is a must have. One caveat, H.L. Mencken is known for his wit and humor. Do not expect it here. This is a serious subject to him and he treats it as such, but for the occasional irresistible jab.

⭐I have just started to read the book and thus far it seems to live up to my expectations. that I have expectations at all is a consequence of reading the “Guardian” review, and in particular it’s very high praise for HL Menken. My other source was Alistair Cooke who praisedMr meekness to the sky.The service was also quite excellent.

⭐The book arrived on time and it looks exactly like it does in the photo. I love Mencken and Im so happy that I finally own a copy og the American Language ^^

⭐A nicely printed product for the price– I wasn’t expecting a keepsake or anything. It is an addition to my set by that author, and I’m quite happy with the delivery speed as well as product quality.
