User’s Reviews
Born Rene Brabazon Raymond in London, the son of a British colonel in the Indian Army, James Hadley Chase was educated at King’s School in Rochester, Kent, and left home at the age of 18. He initially worked in book sales until, inspired by the rise of gangster culture during the Depression and by reading James M. Cain’s The Postman Always Rings Twice, he wrote his first novel, No Orchids for Miss Blandish. Despite the American setting of many of his novels, Chase (like Peter Cheyney, another hugely successful British noir writer) never lived there, writing with the aid of maps and a slang dictionary. He had phenomenal success with the novel, which continued unabated throughout his entire career, spanning 45 years and nearly 90 novels. His work was published in dozens of languages and over thirty titles were adapted for film. He served in the RAF during World War II, where he also edited the RAF Journal. In 1956 he moved to France with his wife and son; they later moved to Switzerland, where Chase lived until his death in 1985. –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

⭐ James Hadley Chase is always an excellent writer, with not many words wasted. This was just typical of the iconic story teller.
⭐ Weak plot
⭐ I will equally raise a brow when a small-time clerk insures his life for $50,000 and subsequently dies ten days later, it doesn’t need any genius to work out something suspicious is going on. So when Maddox, the top man in the insurance business, finds out the scores to be settled, he is determined to get to the bottom of it. And this means trouble for someone. In fact it means trouble for the beautiful, auburn-haired Meg Barlowe, a woman with an eye rising past. for chase, fortune is a woman and if you wish to master her, you must strike and beat her and not proceed more slowly and coldly but fast and strong.
⭐ I recommend this to anyone willing to spend a couple of hours to enjoy this scintillating piece of drama. I enjoyed every little bit of this book as it ranks among the best of JHC suspense thrillers.
⭐ No problems . thank you
⭐ Most of JHC’s books are worth reading. This is one of them. It is amazing how he thinks of so many unexpected twists and turns to the plot. Some of the detective deductions are worthy of Shelock Holmes.
⭐ I collect books by James Hadley Chase, and this didn’t disappoint.
⭐ I had bought a set of selected hadley chase books. This book has so many spellimg mistakes that made reading just seem idiotic.Further the pages from 145 to 152 are missing and 81 to 96 repeated. The experience has left me with a bad taste and amazon should be more careful of the products shown and marketed.
⭐ Thriller novel with full of suspense till the end.
