⭐本書の初版は2006年に発行された。このレビューは2016年に発行された第２版のレビューである。第２版が出る前の2014年に共著者の一人Geoffrey Leechが亡くなったので、急遽David Crystal が参加して、 Jan Svartvik and Geoffrey Leech with Contributions from David Crystal という珍しい著者表記で出版された。Crystalは第２版で付け加えられた１２章Electronic Englishを執筆し全体の校閲も行った。克明に読んで行くと面白い発見、はっとする指摘が随処にある。たとえば、This little woman, she’s ninety years old.It’s nice that table anyway.では、前者は左方転移(left-dislocation)，後者は右方転移（right-dislocation）と呼ばれるが、この２つの用法は話し言葉にほぼ限られるので、左方、右方というのはおかしいのではないか。なるほど音声言語には左も右もない(なお、この２つの用語はもともと生成文法に由来する)。英語の文法・語法・変異（variation）に関心のある人にお薦めする。
