Now this fully revised and redesigned third edition provides an up-to-date and accessible resource for teachers, advanced learners and undergraduate students of English. Accompanying this third edition, there is a completely new Workbook co-authored by ELT specialists Edward Woods and Rudy Coppieters, which will help students to ‘internalise’ the contents of the grammar. A Communicative Grammar of English employs a communicative rather than a structural approach to the learning of English grammar. This edition is divided into three parts. Part One: A guide to the use of this book – looks at the way English grammar varies in different types of English, for example ‘formal’ and ‘informal’, ‘spoken’ and ‘written’. Part Two: Grammar in use – the central and largest part of the book, presents grammar through the eyes of the communicator and focuses on the uses of grammar rather than on grammatical structure. Part Three: A-Z in English grammar – provides a useful and alphabetically arranged guide to English grammar. This new edition includes more real examples taken from corpus data. Increased emphasis is given to grammar in spoken language, providing a better balance between written and spoken English. ⭐I bought a book, a communicative grammar of english for my wife from amazon. in fact, I have not regretted I did this. The book came in good time and is working wonders for my wife in her English literature course. This book is cute, very attractive, and written such that it can easily be read and contents understood. My wife is using the book in Ghana and she is a champion in class.

⭐This is great, though now slightly dated, book based on the monumental A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language published in 1985. An advanced learner of English can learn a great deal from it.

⭐A Communicative Grammar of Englishと銘打った本書で、著者 Leech と Svartvik は communicative competence が grammatical competence、socio-linguistic competence、strategic competence の3要素から成り立っていると規定し（cf. Canale & Swain: 1980)、それぞれの要素をバランスを欠くことなく扱って行くことを目指したという。その具体的な方法として、著者たちは、先ず、文法項目自体を「意味・用法・使用場面 (meanings, uses and situations) 」の視点から系統的に見直したそうだ。既に基本文法を学んできたはずの学習者の多くが、実践でそれを上手く使えないというフラストレーションを感じている（著者たちは、‘grammar fatigue’ がその一因だと言っているが）からだという。次に、従来から慣習的に盲従してきた「文法事項の配列順」を改め、「機能的に相似した文法事項 (例えば、「時」を表す表現) は一か所で同時に取り扱う」という具合に、「時制・相・態を横断した配列」を採用した。さらに、communicative と言うと勢い spoken language に重点が置かれがちだが、著者たちは speech と writing の両方への目配りを忘れていない。などの ‘variety labels’ もしっかりと施されている。最後に、文法や用法の要点を明確にするために時として著者たちが創作した例文が使われているが、多くの場合 authenticで natural liveな用例が、Longman Corpus Network から採用されている。本書のもう一つの特徴は、言葉を ① Words & Phrases、② Sentence、③ Utterance、④ Discourse & Textの 4つのレベルで順を追って詳述していることである。ページを繰るたびに、発話が「深部から表層部へ」あるいは「内部から外部へ」と具現化されて行く過程を追体験するようで、本書をひとたび手に取ると置くこと能わず、ということになってしまう。誠に罪作りな「良書」である。Workbookもなかなか良く出来ている。参考として、文法全般に関しては、古くはA Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language (1989) やThe Cambridge Grammar of the English Language (2002)など、大部で平身低頭を余儀なくさせられるような素晴らしい物もあるが、ごく最近の Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English (1999)、Longman Student Grammar of Spoken and Written English (2002)、Cambridge Grammar of English: A Comprehensive Guide: Spoken and Written English Grammar and Usage (2006)（最後の本は、厳密性を重視する向きからはかなり酷評されているが）なども、本書と共に大変使い勝手が良いことを付け加えておきたい。
