Description
Engineers and scientists of all types are often required to write reports, summaries, manuals, guides, and so forth. While these individuals certainly have had some sort of English or writing course, it is less likely that they have had any instruction in the special requirements of technical writing. Filling this void, Technical Writing: A Practical Guide for Engineers and Scientists enables readers to write, edit, and publish materials of a technical nature, including books, articles, reports, and electronic media. Written by a renowned engineer and widely published technical author, this guide complements the traditional writer’s reference manuals and other books on technical writing. It helps readers understand the practical considerations in writing technical content.Drawing on his own work, the author presents many first-hand examples of writing, editing, and publishing technical materials. These examples illustrate how a publication originated as well as various challenges and solutions.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “Concisely written, fastpaced, comprehensive, and written with workplace expectations in mind, Laplante hits the mark when he says his book is intended to complement reference books or other technical communication books. … The language is easy for students to understand; the design, graphics, and examples keep readers engaged; and it can be a great supplement or primary text depending on how much original material of your own you would like to provide to your students.”―Diane Martinez, Technical Communication, May 2012 About the Author Phillip A. Laplante is a professor of software engineering at Pennsylvania State University’s Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies. Dr. Laplante is an IEEE and SPIE fellow and a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania. His applied research encompasses software project management, software testing, and requirements engineering.
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Great overview for technical writing. I used some of the techniques right away
⭐This book is very good for students who already have a solid foundation in grammar and writing, generally. It is comprehensive and takes you from letter writing for business to publishing technical work. It also discusses writing in an electronic world, which can either help or hinder your career, so this is useful for those who are keen on joining and using social networks and blogs.
⭐This book was written by a computer science professor. Other than a couple examples from martial arts that he practices and references to his home renovation, almost all examples in this book are from his field. So it should say computer scientists and software engineers rather than scientists and engineers. Also, the bulk of the book describes how to get papers published—or should I say the process of applying to have your papers published—so, unless you are a graduate student who somehow doesn’t have a project director or thesis supervisor to guide you in this endeavour, or a professor who managed to obtain an appointment without having published any works, this book is not for you. There are also a few writing mistakes other than the ones the author intentionally included as examples. Since I specifically bought the book to find tips on how to improve technical writing, this irks me to no end. This book was not useful to me.
⭐具体的な演習がないので、少々物足りない感じがした。しかし、初心者にはお勧めできる。
