Description

Language, Cognition, and Human Nature collects together for the first time much of Steven Pinker’s most influential scholarly work on language and cognition. Pinker’s seminal research explores the workings of language and its connections to cognition, perception, social relationships, child development, human evolution, and theories of human nature. This eclectic collection spans Pinker’s thirty-year career, exploring his favorite themes in greater depth and scientific detail. It includes thirteen of Pinker’s classic articles, ranging over topics such as language development in children, mental imagery, the recognition of shapes, the computational architecture of the mind, the meaning and uses of verbs, the evolution of language and cognition, the nature-nurture debate, and the logic of innuendo and euphemism. Each outlines a major theory or takes up an argument with another prominent scholar, such as Stephen Jay Gould, Noam Chomsky, or Richard Dawkins. Featuring a new introduction by Pinker that discusses his books and scholarly work, this collection reflects essential contributions to cognitive science by one of our leading thinkers and public intellectuals.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I’m happy with the book received glad it’s in perfect shape. Thank you.

⭐This book of scholarly papers by my favorite psychologist was INTENSE. Extremely erudite stuff here, not for a popular audience. But unlike some books I’ve read recently (a-HEM, ‘Anxious’ by Dr. LaDoux) this work does not market itself as popular reading. It was very difficult to understand some of it, as I’m merely starting out on my psychology degree and this is written by and for experts, but the topics covered were of intense interest to anyone who enjoys Pinker’s bibliography of more approachable works, and the science behind his more famous tomes was certainly worthy of a read. Know what you’re getting into, but this is an under-appreciated gem.

⭐As usual, Pinker is hard, witty, brilliant and clear. Every page of these collected essays puts my mind through a spinning workout with a demanding charismatic cyclist. I always feel my brain muscles are toned up for the rest of the day. O yes, by the way, I learn about language academics evolution and the human mind along the workout rout.

⭐A specialized work, very difficult for me to follow, but I think my effort was worth enough, sice it made me relize these two things: That language is the vehicle for symbolic and abstract thought and the important role that language plays in structuring the way in which our minds work up.

⭐I didn’t realize this is just a recycling of some of Pinker’s old pubs. I can get these for free through PsychInfo… If you’re not affiliated with a university, maybe worth buying if you want to read some academic articles on the topic.

⭐Similar to Professor Pinker’s other books on the subject. So, if you have read more than two or three of them, you don’t need to read this. But if this is your first or second on the subject, you’ll definitely like it.

⭐No doubt about it. Pinker is hot and here is a collection of his papers important for anyone who considers him or herself a person scientifically concerned. Highly recommended for all my students.

⭐Unfortunately the context was not as I expected but still it was helpful.

⭐Heavy going. I much prefer his book – “The Language Instinct”.

⭐It is in proper condition and without printing mistakes, perfect.

⭐Very disappointed. Despite the lengthy diatribe aiming at his academic community, this book is not for the public nor for the erudite. Using the indiscriminate slang of linguistics with his convoluted prose, the reader will be soon frustrated. The author should learn the basic rules while writhing for the interested general public.
