Description
Today, when our human family is facing so many challenges, it is more important than ever that we find peace and sustenance in our hearts. Love on Every Breath, or Tonglen, is an eight-step meditation for anyone who wants to nourish and open their heart. An ancient and profound meditation that has been practiced in isolated mountain retreats in the Himalayas for centuries, it is now available to us in the modern world. Lama Palden Drolma, a Western teacher trained by Tibetan Buddhist masters and also schooled in contemporary psychotherapy, introduces readers to the meditation in this powerful, user-friendly book. She walks readers step-by-step through the meditation, from beginning issues of sitting with awareness and focusing on the breath to taking in and extending love. Real-life challenges of sadness, anger, and overwhelm are addressed with “On-the-Spot” versions of the meditation. Love on Every Breath is a meditation that changes our experience in the moment — and changes our lives.

Lama Palden faithfully transmits the traditional instruction she received from her many Tibetan masters, while speaking in the warm, conversational tone of an intimate friend. . . . Love on Every Breath is rigorous enough to appeal to the dedicated Buddhist practitioner, while being accessible to people of every religious or nonreligious persuasion.” — Lewis Richmond, author of Aging as a Spiritual Practice “As a Catholic Sister, I found Lama Palden’s book, Love on Every Breath, to be an important spiritual work for persons of every spiritual tradition. Living in such a time of increasing hatred and violence, Palden’s sharing of how to grow our capacity for compassion through her enhanced practice of Tonglen is so needed. Her explanation of the Buddhist framework for this practice is clear and interspersed with examples from her life, making it very readable for those not as familiar with that tradition.” — Sister Nancy Sylvester, IHM, Institute for Communal Contemplation and Dialogue “With all the suffering in our world right now, there isn’t a better time to learn and use this compassionate and loving practice.” — Krysta Gibson, New Spirit Journal “Impressively informative, exceptionally well organized and presented, Love on Every Breath: Tonglen Meditation for Transforming Pain into Joy is a life changing, life enhancing, life celebrating read from first page to last.” — Midwest Book Review “In Love on Every Breath, Lama Palden offers us a clear and powerful treatise on how to turn suffering into compassion, both within ourselves and with all others. Prendergast, PhD, author of The Deep Heart and In Touch “Love on Every Breath by Lama Palden Drolma brings to the public an ancient meditation practice, one that can help transform our personal and collective grief by awakening the love and compassion that are inherent in all beings. This book is a beautiful exploration of a practice that is so very needed today and is accessible to all. It is a practice that can be done in solitude in deep meditation or on the subway during one’s daily commute. As individuals and as a collective, we are dealing with much suffering in our world today, both human and planetary. There is no more urgent task than to learn to transform this pain into love so that we can awaken to a greater sense of well-being and to the true reality of what is. Lama Palden shows us the way by recounting stories from her own journey. She shows us that by practicing the Love on Every Breath meditation techniques, we, too, can find the beauty and love that reside in each and every heart.” — Dena Merriam, founder of the Global Peace Initiative of Women and the Contemplative Alliance “Lama Palden Drolma’s book, Love on Every Breath, is a beautiful guide for activating the awakened heart through her translation of this ancient Tibetan practice. She applies the teachings not only to Tibetan Buddhism but to all traditions, bridging the Eastern and Western practices, as her own lived experience. As a Western woman who was born into Christianity and who was called and trained to become a lama, she has the spiritual capacity to find the common ground and healing potential of love held at the core of the mystical traditions and bring it forth to her readers in a way that transforms pain into joy through love. Reading her book is a powerful blessing.” — Carolyn Rivers, founder and director of the Sophia Institute About the Author Lama Palden Drolma is a licensed psychotherapist, spiritual teacher, and coach. She has studied Buddhism in the Himalayas with some of the preeminent Tibetan masters of the twentieth century, including Kalu Rinpoche, who authorized her to become one of the first Western lamas. ⭐I have been reading books about meditation in preparation for a class I would like to teach. I found this book to be very helpful in understanding how to use Tonglen meditational techniques. This book is highly readable for people in the West (USA) who may not have the cultural background to really access Tibetan Buddhist concepts. It is a highly personal account of the authors’ life experiences and I found it very compelling.
⭐Full of insightful personal stories about the author’s life experiences including those with Tibetan lineage masters, as well as her deep insights into the nature of the heart/mind, make reading this book a rich and powerful experience for both experienced meditatiors and novice meditators looking for a way to understand Tibetan Buddhism or looking for a way to related to the painful realities of our world as well as personal pains and traumas. A book that is respectful of the very human journey of the heart that is at the core of every true spiritual practice. An articulate and joyful read! Practices that will take a practitioner far. Highly recommend it!
⭐This beautiful book is an excellent introduction to the practice of Tonglen — a Tibetan Buddhist practice that does alchemy on our difficult emotions. The practice is simple, powerful and practical, transforming personal suffering into compassion, pain into love. The book offers plenty of background as well as personal stories, and different forms of the meditation that are useful in different contexts — as a practice of heart opening, a practice to cleanse and transform suffering in a formal practice, and one that can easily be done on the run, as a part of daily life, that is surprisingly effective at transforming difficult circumstances and emotions. Lama Palden’s depth of practice and sincerity shines through the book, inspiring dedication and depth of involvement with the spiritual journey. Enough depth to interest a serious Vajrayana practitioner while being accessible to anyone on a sincere spiritual path.
⭐As I read this book, I could feel myself begin to experience a sense of hope that I, too, can make a real and tangible difference in a world that is hurting right now. Lama Palden offers an easy to understand interpretation of an ancient practice that helps us open our hearts during difficult times, whether these are on a personal, community or global level. This is a practice that can be done by anyone, anywhere, no matter who you are or what path you follow. It is a tool that is meant for these times, a tool that offers us the opportunity to open even more to our own compassion and wisdom. Thank you, Lama Palden, for handing us this precious gift!
⭐Lama Palden Drolma delivers in a warm and accessible way the ancient Buddhist teachings of transforming one’s small, isolated ego-self into a grounded, strong open heart. The world needs more people that can see past their self-interest, and that can only happen when we learn to transform our ego conditioning. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used the on-the-spot tonglen practice. It has helped me time and again with staying alive, engaged and present with whatever is happening. This little book is a gem.
⭐Wow, my life will never be the same after reading Love on Every Breath. This meditation changed my life — for the better! The author guides you through each step with surprising ease. Her use of calming language kept me patient and open-hearted throughout the whole experience. This book taught me things about myself that I hadn’t fully realized before. Days after I finished it, my mom picked it up and hasn’t stopped reading since!Thank you, Lama Palden Drolma!
⭐Makes an ancient Tibetan practice accessible to everyday life in the West. The author is a therapist as well as a lama, and it shows in her ability to bridge psychological and spiritual understanding. I also love how personal it is, with plenty of stories and examples from the author’s own life and spiritual journey. Highly recommended!
⭐This book offers resources to center, sooth, renew and ignite untapped potential. This timeless practice is beautifully shared and made accessible. Begin here and your life will flourish!
⭐Lama Drolma describes in a very nice readable book, how to meditate in 6/8 steps to Tonglen, the Tibetan ancient meditation of giving and taking. Each step is nicely described, all visualizations, which are necessary to complete and succesfully do this meditation are well described and written. Beautiful, positive words, some personal stories from the author or her students complete this wonderful book. What I liked most was the very well and detailled explanation of the visualization of the crystal vajra in the heart chakra and Chenrezig on top of the head. Explains also “on – spot” meditations, which can be done immediate and in situations where urgent help is needed! Very helpful, very nice readable book, love it!
⭐Tonglen is something that everyone can learn with ease. Will make a huge difference to your life for the better.
