User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I can only review the service of the product. I placed and order and the book arrived in two days. So quick that i actually did not know what it was as I had not expected it for another few days. The writings themselves are parsed from various entries in the diary of the Buddhist traveler. More of a reference than a story to follow. Best used to fill in any historical reading of the period and area.
⭐A Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms is a good reference source that takes into account the religious tradition of Asia as witnessed by Chinese Buddhist Monk Faxian. Although his travelogue is brief and appears more as a journal, one should not discount the succinct appearance because the contents and all 40 chapters are a wealth of information are an important piece of history that also implements significant figures who helped to contribute to the influence of Buddhism throughout the Asian landscape bridging a great relationship between the East and West, Alexander the Great, Kanishka, and Indian leaders Chandragupta and Asoka as well as what Faxian observed within the kingdoms in terms of the display of ritual, tradition, and community that Buddha initially encountered during his path of enlightenment at Sankasya Kingdom.Overall, the electronic edition of this primary document provides readers the convenient access to refer to the source at any time. And the brief accounts along with the footnotes allow readers to easily find the definitions and explanations of what is being discussed.
⭐While I have come across many chapters of this text I always wanted to read the whole text. In opening the book it was so well written with great commentaries the text became a research of its own where it makes the reader a companion. Learned a lot about these sacred places and plan on visiting the Indian journey to eyewitness it ice this corvid~19 epidemic fades.
⭐I have to say there is nothing I dislike, but can,t comprehend the dates.Only wish this work gets distributed to Chinese people at least now. Govt of china can afford financially to do this & shed light on the works of this Great missionary adveturer. Would reccomend this to people who believe ” religions are like small rivers merging & mixing in the “ocean of Cosmic religious tolerance” Dr v.a.Tony Ram
⭐You have to be something of a Buddhist buff to really appreciate this book. I give it two stars for the general reader, but it is a wonderful first hand account of Indian and Chinese Buddhism from 399 and 412 as the monk FaXian traveled from monastery to monastery on foot.
⭐Love this sort of first-hand record, but this one is just a rambling record of unpronouncable place names and stupid legends. I suspect much of it is fake anyway, and this old joker didn’t even go to most of the places claimed.
⭐love the ancient cultures this is a good read
⭐This is an annotated translation of a historical journal, documenting the fifth century travels into India of a Chinese monk (called throughout the text Fa-Hien, but referred to more accurately in the title as Fa-Hsien). The notes and translation are by one James Legge. I thought it would be fascinating material, but I was disappointed. The notes take up more space than the original writing, are generally not very interesting or informative. They often relate to translation issues which are made no clearer by the fact that this edition offers empty parentheses instead of the Chinese and Korean characters from the original text. And the travel notes themselves are rather dull, mostly describing the various Buddhist monasteries and shrines he visited and listing their financial assets, roster numbers and so on. Occasionally you get something with life and colour, as when he was terrified of tigers while crossing certain wild lands, or when one of his companions died; but mostly it is dull and repetitive. The Kindle edition also is very poor. There are many typos; there is the problem with the missing characters, and illustrations are also mentioned in the text which are not present at all. And the footnotes are both awkward to access and intrusive. On the whole, I wouldn’t bother if I were you.
⭐It’s free, so I suppose there’s no harm in downloading it for yourself, but I found this text impossible to enjoy in this format. Flicking back and forth between the very necessary footnotes and the main text is a chore, and the Chinese characters used (discussed in great detail in the introduction, down to font used) are wholly omited. Disappointing.I would consider rereading this on a different device, perhaps Amazon’s pc software, but on the Kindle, it’s just too flawed a transcript to be considered readable.

⭐This book is an account by the Chinese Monk Fahsien of his travels in India ad Ceylon long back, in A.D. 399 -414) in search of the Buddhist Books of discipline. Given that the account is so old and historical, the text is well preserved and provides a fresh perspective on the subject. A must read for history buffs and those who study the religion.
