Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is a surprising collection of Buddhist ideas and History; Better than the usual tired, flat, mystical magic show stuff too often pedaled in books and audio, although some of that has something to offer as a baseline. This is good, real good. Also recommend Zen and the Japanese Culture by Susuki… the second half is what caught my attention on a young Samuri in training suddenly came to the realization that to survive he must give up hope of surviving. Makes sense, begging for mercy, not going to work. This Dummies book is good in that it provides the whole spectrum from, don’t step on a worm to what Siddhartha actually might have been saying about Nirvana… a sleep without a dream. All that reincarnation stuff followed after the master [lower case – just like he would want it] who “got it” thenty-five hundred years ago! Lesser beings followed and provided the needed soft cuddle…
⭐I personally don’t like the title of the whole “For Dummies” series of books and have found some of them lacking. This book is authored by 3 well informed practitioners in a style that is contemporary and accessible. I was delighted to be surprised by the quality of content and progression of the subject. I found many good reminders. This book is useful to beginners as well as the experienced.
⭐Great overview of all the varieties of Buddhism. If you are just getting started yourself or want to know what a loved one finds appealing in Buddhism, this is a good book for you. It might also be appealing if you are well versed in ONE area of Buddhism, but are wondering what the different variations of Buddhism believe and practice. This is NOT an indepth exploration of any one path or area of Buddhism.
⭐I gave this book to my 18 year old Granddaughter for Christmas. She had announced that she was Buddhist. She really did not know what Buddism was – she liked the meditation aspect and the reincarnation belief. She read it and said she was now deciding if Buddism was right for her. Mission accomplished. Making sound decisions based on fact and faith are the basics of leading a happy life.
⭐Covers all the basics of Buddhism and a list of books you can read to dive in further. Most of the teachings are basically what Jesus said, which is rather humorous to me.
⭐Liked the content if the book but a lot of the pages were stuck together along the bottom edges. (see photo)
⭐I was recommended to read this book in my quest to learn more of Buddhism. I’ve begun reading many other books on Buddhism and found it to be overwhelming. This is the first “for DUMMIES” book I’ve bought. The book is written in simple, layperson’s terms so I was immediately drawn to continue reading. I learned so much in a short period of time due to the flow which it is written. Lots of clues given to remind you of important areas. Although I found all of it interesting, thought-provoking, and extremely applicable to daily living.
⭐As with all of the other books in the “Dummies” series, this book was written very well for people who have little to no knowledge on Buddhism and its concepts whilst not bogging the reader down in too much technical jargon. It is easy to understand and flows well from topic to topic and has elements of humor, which is always a nice touch in this series. This book would be good for people interested in learning more about Buddhism and steers the reader to further expand their knowledge with many references in the back of the book.
⭐Only read a few chapters thus far but this is one of the most informative and interesting books I have ever read! After losing my way in life in little, I decided to start learning something new and so I ordered this book. Gives a good background of the history, as well as stories, and practices. Solid piece of literature. If you’re a dummy and wanted to learn more about Buddhism like me, order this book!
⭐This is an excellent introduction to Buddhism. It is written in a simple style making some complex ideas very accessible. It is packed with information about the life of the Buddha, different styles of Buddhism, basic tenets and historical information. I found it fascinating and enjoyable. It has made me want to delve deeper into the subject and to start to practise more seriously. I feel incorporating Buddhist practices with my pre-existing shaky Christian beliefs could solve a lot of my problems. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in spirituality.
⭐Buddhism for beginners is a good title for this book however, it does get a bit technical in parts. The book gives you a potted history of Buddhism, some core concepts and an overview of Buddhism throughout the world. My advice is if you buy this and it gets a too technical (stuff you don’t understand) just skip these parts and go back to them at the end. There is a list of other materials at the end of the book but at the end of the day you cannot understand/learn Buddhism from a book. Join a local Buddhist class and learn from there, hopefully the book will pique your interest sufficiently for you to explore further.
⭐I have lost count of how many copies of this excellent book I have purchased and given away. I am an ordained Buddhist and am frequently asked by newcommers to suggest a book that provides an overview of all the main schools of Buddhism, and I am yet to find anything better than Buddhism for Dummies. It is written with authority but without dogma, but most of all, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, so it is very accessible. I frequently refer to it when preparing talks on Buddhism to beginners. A great book!
⭐Buddhism has always appealed to me after various visits to Buddhist countries during my travels and I’ve slowly but surely been delving deeper in the teachings. Ive read a good few books on the subject by various teachers however it’s been quite difficult to find an “all in one” book about Buddhism that explains the basics but also delves a little deeper too. This book is just the book. I wish it had been the first book I read on the subject. Don’t be put off with the “for dummies” title. It’s very well written and easy to understand. Thanks!
