Description
In 2010, Lucy and her long-term boyfriend John broke up. Three long, lonely years later, John returned to New York, walked into Lucy’s apartment, and proposed.
This is not that story. It is the story of what came after: The Wedding.
DIY maven Lucy Knisley was fascinated by American wedding culture . . . but also sort of horrified by it. So she set out to plan and execute the adorable DIY wedding to end all adorable DIY weddings. And she succeeded. This graphic novel, Something New–clocking in at almost 300 pages of humor, despair, and eternal love–is the story of how Lucy built a barn, invented a whole new kind of photo booth, and managed to turn an outdoor wedding on a rainy day into a joyous (though muddy) triumph.
User’s Reviews
Review “[This] graphic-novel memoir from First Second Books follows Lucy Knisley’s own decade-long saga toward the altar, as well as her own keen and amusing observations on the marital industry she curated along the way.” ―The Washington Post”It’s digressive, meandering and entirely charming ― her comics read like a letter one treasures.”―The New York Times”She artfully makes the details of her own experiences appeal to different readers, but it’s the emotion behind her writing and beautiful style that manages to be both sweet and brutally honest.” ―AV Club”Knisley is a wonderful creator and artist, and someone who clearly was made to be married. This book is as sweetly romantic as it is manically comedic.”―Boing Boing –This text refers to the paperback edition.
Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:
⭐ I first discovered Lucy’s cartoons through her “Stop Paying Attention” comic. “Relish”, “French Milk”, and “Displacement” are all faves. The new, meaty “Something New” is part memoir, part slice-of-bridal-industry life and entirely enjoyable. From the flowchart on whether to attend a wedding to the arguments over music for the wedding, this is very satisfying.
⭐ Another terrific graphic memoir from Ms. Knisley. There’s no need to go into great detail about the content of the book; you just need to read it and go on the journey with her. If you have read her other books, this one does not disappoint, and only serves to further her status as a singular talent as both a visual and narrative artist.I look forward to more of her future work; it’s truly a gift.
⭐ I so relate to this bride. I was allowed 8000 dollars for my wedding in 1995, and much of the execution was from me and my friends creative hands.Slave to Michaels, calling on friends…. my wedding was the most beautiful original party ever, just like Lucy`s wedding was the most incredible thing I have ever seen drawn. I love her style, and color sense. She has a way of drawing the viewer in to where they would swear they had attended or was there for that incident.I will keep buying her books as I can. Can`t wait to read about baby Knisley in “Kid Gloves.”
⭐ I just got engaged and loved reading this book, its about not just the process you go through as a makeshift bride but about relationships, craftiness, love, and most of all, finding joy and humor in it all. I’m so glad I got this book <3 It's perfect ⭐ Great book, a real source of comfort and ideas while planning my own wedding. Her style is always lovely and relatable, and I appreciate that I'm only a few steps behind her in life plans (glad she already has a book on having a baby for my next life step!)But seriously, her work is great. ⭐ I've followed Lucy Knisley's online work for quite a while, but as a young, newly-engaged adult, I was especially interested in this book. There's something quite comforting about being able to hold her work in your hands. It feels very intimate, which is a great plus considering the tone of her work. The book is honest and (surprisingly!) informative. The pacing is wonderful, and all of the tension within the first 3/4ths of the book leads up to a truly beautiful conclusion. As always, Knisley's perspective on life events is relatable and raw. The book makes you truly feel like you are by her side every step of this chaotic adventure we call love.I can't wait to read it again, and again. And make my fiance read it, too! ⭐ My gosh I just loved this. I'm almost afraid to write much of a review because it's just going to sound gushy and crazy. I am a huge fan of Lucy Knisley ever since picking up 'French Milk' on a whim years ago. She just keeps getting better, I think. I am sure some people will (as with most of Knisley's graphic novels) pick up on a lot of privilege in the author's life. I think she acknowledges that privilege and is very real! If anything, I respect her more (her wild crashing talent aside) for being born to some pretty hifalutin' artsy people and still becoming such a thoughtful, caring, authentic person. Although my second marriage in 2013 was a Colorado elopement, my husband and I both read this book in a matter of two days and marveled at the similarities between our own wedding-related choices and those of John and Lucy. Some of it was surreal (unusual toppers for a unique gourmet "cake" option, making my own veil and pennants, etc). Such fun and I think years from now this will be a great time capsule for the current era while still holding onto some very timeless themes and questions. I laughed out loud a lot too. There's nothing missing from this. Buy it now. ⭐ What a kind, generous, honest, naughty, complex, playful, witty and wonderful person comes through the text and its lively drawings. The world seems richer better place after spending time with this book; thank you. ⭐ I follow Lucy on Instagram and she is so funny and warm, and such a talented individual! I just knew I had to buy this as soon as I got engaged. The wedding world is tough to navigate, especially when you're an alternative-anti-everything-shy bride, like myself. This book is so heartfelt and so beautifully illustrated and written, that it makes you feel as though you're having a discussion with a dear old friend, whom is offering you comfort and advice. Highly recommend for the nerdy or shy bride or groom to be...or for somebody looking for good feels! ⭐ I love Lucy’s work and this was no exception. Very sweet story and relatable it you have gotten married in the 21st century. I love everything about this including the real life pictures she’s included.
