⭐I’ve taken calc 1-3, ODE, PDE, Linear Algebra, Proofs, Abstract Algebra etc. and even then this book is a struggle to read. As others have stated, it’s a lot of information and not enough depth and clarity.The author attempts to give theory and then gives an example with a bunch of missing steps. I attempted to read the calculus of Variations section since I am already very familiar with linear algebra at an elementary and proof based level. OOF. I tried every which way to follow and recreate the authors results but alas after four hours I could not. I tried using other resources and online calculators and to no avail. (Yes I understood what was being asked of me, I just could not recreate the authors results.)I’m not sure who this book is written for, perhaps a graduate student requiring some references? This book is very difficult to read from. It’s a shame because I love reading books that don’t follow the theorem proof theorem proof style.I really wanted to like this book to be quite honest, but I think people are better off just buying three quality books one on linear algebra, calculus of Variations and integral equations instead of trying to buy a book that tries to do everything.

⭐The book uses most of chapter 1 to explain techniques and concepts from Linear Algebra. Toward the end he makes the connection between vector space and functional space and has a common language developed. The Linear Algebra is not of a very high level and should have been covered in a good undergraduate course. The Function Space concepts should be familiar to anyone having taking ODE using Fourier Transforms. I am know working in Chapter 2 and the concise way he writes leaves out steps or doesn’t make explicit connections and so I find myself re-reading and looking for other resources. I have not tried the exercises but they look to run from straight forward to ridiculous, which is probably what a graduate text should do. So if he had used a few more words and steps I would give 5 stars but alas, I cannot.

⭐This textbook is not very readable. It is very dense, and does not contain much in the way of explanation. If you can learn applied math straight out of this textbook, then you are smarter than I am. For me, I had to find a bunch of other resources to help me learn the material… a compilation of other less-terrible textbooks checked out from the library plus a bunch of internet resources.

⭐I did my Ph. d. on integral equation techniques, and I spent a lot of time in the math library looking for books on the subject that I could understand. This was easily the best book I found. After reading it, it becomes clear that inegral equations are very closely related to matrix equations.

⭐I have used many books by Hildebrand for most of my advanced self-study in maths.This is one of the excellent texts ,covering matrices and variational methods in an easy manner.–glad that Dover has reprinted this classic work.

⭐Francis Hildebrand is one of the best mathematicians who existed and every one of his books are diamonds. This is yet another one by him. The book contains only 3 chapters, and they are among the best treatment you can find anywhere. For anyone interested in applied mathematics, this book is a MUST READ.

⭐Really good presentation (in the style of its age, 1952, 2nd Ed 1965), particularly the section on Calculus of Variations. It is an OU recommended text for the MSc in Mathematics course. Probably not appropriate for most at undergraduate level. It is certainly not a book for students who prefer texts to be illustrated with diagrams.

⭐This is written in the good old-fashioned style of the 50’s and 60’s but so what. It is clearly written and not overloaded with extraneous material; it’s just what I wanted

⭐Still simply the best for a quick but comprehensive introduction to the classical methods of applied mathematics.
