Description

Here is Hans Hoppe’s first treatise in English — actually his first book in English — and the one that put him on the map as a social thinker and economist to watch. He argued that there are only two possible archetypes in economic affairs: socialism and capitalism. All systems are combinations of those two types. The capitalist model he defines as pure protection of private property, free association, and exchange — no exceptions. All deviations from that ideal are species of socialism, with public ownership and interference with trade.Within the structure of socialism, he distinguishes between left and right versions. “Conservative” socialism favors high regulation, behavioral controls, protectionism, and nationalism. The “liberal” version tends more toward outright public ownership and redistribution. The consequences of socialism vary based on their degree and kind, but they have similarities: high costs, resource waste, low growth. This treatise has long been out of print, but is now available again for use in comparative-systems classes and for an orientation to the theory of economic systems. The theoretical apparatus is Rothbardian to the core, and its main contribution is to provide an organizing principle for understanding the structure of real-world economies as measured against pure types.A tour de force. To search for Mises Institute titles, enter a keyword and LvMI (short for Ludwig von Mises Institute); e.g., Depression LvMI

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐It is not easy to fing the real problems with socialism. We are NOT educated to critique the political consequences of an economic system. The author helps us a lot. Probably 4 1/2 stars. A good read. Be patient.

⭐The author made many qualified arguments in his comparisons of Socialism and Capitalism but the style of writing was almost painful to read. Here is a typical sentence:In so doing, two separate but related claims will be analyzed: (1) the claim made in particular by socialists of the Marxist and the social-democratic camp, and to a lesser degree also by the conservatives, that a principled case in favor of socialism can be made because of the moral value of its principles and, mutatis mutandis, that capitalism cannot be defended morally; and (2) the claim of empiricist socialism that normative statements (“should” or “ought” statements — since they neither solely relate to facts, nor simply state a verbal definition, and thus are neither empirical nor analytical statements — are not really statements at all, at least not statements that one could call “cognitive” in the widest of all senses, but rather mere “verbal expressions” used to express or arouse feelings (such as “Wow” or “grrrr”).

⭐You can learn a lot just by reading the first two chapters abut the difference between capitalism and socialism. I like its clear explanation of property, property rights, and differences in acquiring property through contracts or aggression. It also explains the clear differences between the “Russian” style socialism and the socialism practiced in the western socialists countries. One of the interesting descriptions is the effect that socialism has on people’s psyche making it difficult to return back to capitalistic society.Should be a required reading for the high school students.

⭐A necessity to anyone who calls himself an anarchist, libertarian, capitalist, or just anyone who loves freedom.

⭐A masterpiece that expands your mind, fires up your intellectual curiosity, and exposes the guts and gore of socialism in a truly paradigm-altering way. Essential reading for any libertarian. Kryptonite to socialists, who won’t dare read it.

⭐Excellent book. Hoppe’s review of why free market capitalism is superior to socialism is exhaustive. If you haven’t been exposed to the Austrian Theory of economics, this book is a good place to start. The bonus is that you will have a better understanding why the economy collapsing.

⭐Every kid whose mind is getting poisoned by left-wing radical college professors should read this so he/she will understand how the world really works and what works best.

⭐Hoppe is absolutely brilliant. Starting with no assumption, Hoppe destroys the notion that socialism is an ethical and efficient system and builds an irrefutable case for capitalism. Recommended 10/10

⭐Simply put: what is socialism and what is capitalism? What different forms of socialism are there? Why is socialism indefensible from both an economic and moral standpoint?Hans-Herman Hoppe answers all of these questions with trademark clarity

⭐Great read. If you had any doubts that maybe socialism is not so bad.

⭐Clear, concise and correct. A must read for all lovers of liberty, peace and prosperity. The author can not be praised enough. Read his others works too

⭐Never read anything quite like this. Quite amazing thinking. Pretty well puts an end to socialist thought in a categorical and unequivocal way. Super read.
