Description

In 1951 the Festival of Britain marks a new golden age of hope and prosperity for the country. Things are certainly looking up for the criminal elite who run the East End. For Jack, a draft-dodger with aspirations to be a champion boxer, there’s easy money to be made for providing a bit of muscle. Meanwhile his sister Kath must keep secret the fact that she killed their father to protect her son, Brian, from the abuse she experienced as a child. Brian is so traumatised by witnessing this event that the complex union of violence and sexuality will shape his character for life. As the years go by and disillusion sets in, successive Labour and Tory governments aren’t able to stop the rot. Younger, nastier criminals like the Kray twins and the Richardson brothers begin to carve out their own criminal empires and crush all resistance. Brutalised and embittered by years of failure and imprisonment, Jack decides to make a stand. The stage is set for one big war. Crime and Punishment is the first volume in a two-part epic, and follows the characters’ lives up until the accession of Thatcher. The second volume will trace the dramatic changes in criminal society that reflected the wider social upheaval of the times, right up until the present day.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Great Book, full of the feelings of the times and the behaviour of the police and criminals.BUT BEWARE OF A RIP OFF!!!: I bought this book together with GF Newmans The Corrupted Part One and Part Two BUT THESE ARE THE SAME BOOK!!!!No warning on the Amazon site so I parted with $12.62 for two books I will never read!!!Poor Show Amazon!!!

⭐Everything he writes can only be based on his experiences, I am always wondering what side of the law his experiences come from. The law and order trilogy is a must read for anyone who is contemplating a career in law enforcment

⭐I truly enjoyed this book. This is one of those books you do not want to put down. Every page will hold you. G.F.Newman is an excellent author.

⭐Creates the mood of the epoch brilliantly. True amorality. The brutality of criminals in an era of emerging opportunities, where corruption was widespread.Although ostensibly and defensively described as a work of fiction, it is essentially an historical analysis where only the names have been changed (barely) to protect the author from prosecution.Well-written, gripping and racing along, it is not a work for the faint hearted to tackle but not on a full stomach.

⭐I bought and read this book because of the Radio 4 series and thoroughly enjoyed it although not my usual type of read. Perhaps the hook for me was being a child of the times and living close to East London. I was not conscious of the “clichéd writing” mentioned by some other reviewers, I was fascinated by the disclosures of life amongst a certain group of people who touched the lives of many that I met in my early years.

⭐An excellent and very well written , well researched ” page turner ” GF Newman has clearly done his homework in producing this gripping read . The charactersand locations are recognisable to any reader of the crime/thriller genre with the clever mixing of fact and fiction in driving the narrative . The criminal milieu fits in very well with the social and political changes in the country and in London in particular with the emergence of ” bent ” politicians , policemen , property developers and the pursuance of money and power , often by very corrupt methods and outcomes .GF Newman is not afraid to represent the issues and personalities in a direct , very readable way and his depiction of the characters and behaviours of thecriminal families goes in some ways to attack the notion of ” lovable rogues “beloved by some crime writers . A must for the serious reader of crime fiction.

⭐Thoroughly enjoyed the book that is left with every chance of as equal. This in its way is a British Godfather, a crime extravaganza, well written and tracks the lives of a family from poor beginnings to a diversity of success through violence and crime. Full of the street life of poor cities and the drive to make good. Men re loses its pace through the development of good strong characters inter woven with a feel of real life events.

⭐Having been brought up in the East End, I was intrigued to read this book. All to often, authors of this period just do not get it right. However GF Newman has really done his homework and it pulled me right back to my childhood. Intriguing story of villains and their mentality. I absolutely recommend this book.; Terrific read.
