Description
“If all pop psychology–self-help books were as sprightly and insightful as this, they would corner the market. Psychiatrist Skynner and humorist Cleese of Monty Python fame . . . expand the idea of the healthy individual raised in a healthy family becoming a contributor to a healthy society. Particularly relevant is their astute analysis of our society’s attitudes toward directness, money, celebrity, and winning. The authors go on to discuss values, religion, death, and change, all with an ingratiating lack of dogmatism.” ―Publishers Weekly What makes people tick? What about families, organizations such as schools and businesses, or societies? By understanding them, can we make them tick better? Where does religion fit in? In this entertaining book, England’s odd couple―psychiatrist-scholar Robin Skynner and comic John Cleese―answer these provocative questions and others, as they embark on a fascinating, mind-stretching search for what really matters in life. Cartoons throughout. Media publicity.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐this book and the one about surviving families coauthored with cleese and a reallyo trullieo psychogist, or so he claims, was the resultof my late night buying frenzy where was able to pay thelowesrprice for not one but two holy handgernades of antioch. with full instructions. bt the time i stopped reading this which i wil get back to in time, i found the book to be very good and that i fall into the category of the really well balanced indivuals whose home is a circus. i thought that john was really cool for doing those books so howcom i nevere heard of it when it was publishedand i could have used the informationand had not yer disinherited my children in favorof a person who siad if i dropped dead he would take care of my dogs and my chidren said they would not.
⭐I first came across this book in a small bookstore in the top of the north island of new zealand which I just happened to be wandering around, and found myself magnetically drawn to it (cover alone!) to the point that I scrounged together funds from friends in the store (begged, borrowed – no stealing though) to buy it.I’ve never regretted it – the book very fundamentally changed my life, very much for the better. Of the number of people I have recommended it to as a read, most have said it has provided great clarity and an ability to resolve some tricky matters that previously they simply had had appropriate mentals tools to grapple with to a successful resolution. One did however scold me – for not having insisted, rather than simply suggested, that he read it. Further information in this area that I would recommend is an interview of Abraham Maslow, titled “Self Actualisation”.
⭐A brilliant overview of the World and the people in it. There have been many reviews so i won’t repeat or try to add to them. i only would like to point out how this book has been dismissed/ignored by the Psych Professions which I find alarming. I used to work in the Mental Health sector; no one had heard of this book or showed any desire to read it.I could go on. Thank God for books like this (it’s a wonder it was allowed to be published)
⭐Robin Skynner and John Cleese – an allstar duo for life, therapy, and anything else you happen to be interested in! Check out their ‘Families and How to Survive Them’ too – brilliantly clear about murky situations.
⭐Is a good book. I love Monty Python and this book is both insightful and entertaining, although it’s not John Cleese’s BEST work. It was worth the read, and I bought a copy for my friend.
⭐I enjoy this book, and go back to it sometimes for enjoyment, but it is not too deep, and very conscious and a bit slow in explaining its concepts. There’s some insight, but I would recommend this mostly for fans of John Cleese who are also interested in the subject of the book.
⭐I read Families many times, so after Life got Kindled, I rushed to read it again in english (I read it 3 years ago in czech) and must say I really liked it.Concise guide to a life indeed.
⭐Everybody should read this one ; as well the families book from the same Authors.
⭐If you want to learn more about life and the choices we can make for the way we want to be, this is a good book – its in dialogue and has cartoons in, so is very different from other books offering insight into our lives. Among the other excellent books out there, I recommend “Emotional Agility’ by Susan David. Paperback, and also full of insight and good things.
⭐I recommend this to absolutely everyone who wants to understand their thinking, or other people’s thinking, a bit better, or is frustrated by a relationship or stuck in a rut. Very readable, entertaining, mix of theory and practical / anecdotes. Great first introduction to psychological theory…. We’re all a lot easier to explain than you might think!I also love the focus on positive psychology; let’s understand why some people are exceptionally well adjusted, rather than just looking at the issues. For me this book was the start of a life changing journey towards a better understanding of myself and the world. Amazing.
⭐Charming and funny read, as well as being educational to the brain…One issue I would have like it to be longer, however Mr Cleese did point out it was a One stop read…
⭐I am sure it’s great but the size of it put me.off
⭐Classic now but still very relevant to todays world, the lives we live and a journey into a bigger picture. Yes, still very relevant to todays world, how we think and connect and relate. Good reading, non academic and funny… a conversation between a relationship “guru” and Cleese during his own journey.
