Description
Game theory has revolutionized economics research and teaching during the past two decades. There are few undergraduate or graduate courses in which it does not form a core component. Game theory is the study of multi-decision problems and such problems occur frequently in economics. Industrial organization provides many examples where firms must consider the reactions of others. But there are many other areas in which it is applicable – from individual workers vying for promotion to countries competing or colluding to choose trade policies. Bob Gibbons provides an introduction to the branches of game theory that have been widely applied in economics. He emphasizes the applications as much as the pure theory. This not only helps to teach the theory, but also illustrates the process of model building – the process of translating an informal description of a multi-person decision situation into a formal, game theoretic problem to be analyzed. The approach aims to serve as both an introduction to those who will go on to specialize as pure game-theorists. It also introduces game theory to those who will later construct (or at least use) game-theoretic models in applied fields of economics.

⭐Good condition.
⭐When I saw that this book had no reviews I decided to write one, since it deserves a recommendation. It is really a very good text that can serve both as an introduction at undergraduate level or as a refresher. It is clear and comprehensive, covering all the basic game theory an economists would like to know. Moreover, the theory is illustrated with very interesting examples (cournot competition, job market signaling, efficiency wages etc.), boiled down to the right level of complexity. Naturally, you will not get much mathematical depth, but there are some proof-sketches. The exercises are challenging enough but unfortunately without solutions, perhaps the only minus. In summary, a great primer for a broad audience.
⭐This book is a very logical, systematic introduction to game theory. It is focussed on economics, so should be ideal for economics undergrads. There is a little mathematics background assumed (school level calculus should suffice), but the mathematics is sometimes omitted entirely, which can make the text difficult to follow. So, overall I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.
⭐The best on game theory really. Simple and very good… from most basic to quite advanced.
⭐Coming in at about 250 A5 pages, all in black and white with all the fancy editing you could expect from microsoft word 98 edition, this book wastes no paper nor ink. It is extremely concise and every single word is vital for understanding. As a student, I find this infuriating. While the mathematics is very simple, it features only sums and simple calculus, Gibbons has a habit of doing three or four mathematical operations in one go, without informing us lowly mortals as to why or what, so in many examples you’ll find yourself scratching your head trying to reverse engineer the process he used to get from A to B. Game theory is a subject where you juggle lots and lots of variables at once, so when you add the above confusion it can feel like banging your head against the wall sometimes. This book in many ways has more in common with a formula collection than a textbook, and as such I cannot recommend it to anyone who’s new to the subject of game theory.
⭐If you know nothing about game theory, consider this book. It’s easy to understand and has practical exmples straight to the point of theory.
⭐The best feature of this book is the many game theoretic applications that are provided. So, overall I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.
