Description
From the author of Serial Killers: The Method and Madness of Monsters comes an in-depth examination of sexual serial killers throughout human history, how they evolved, and why we are drawn to their horrifying crimes. Before the term was coined in 1981, there were no “serial killers.” There were only “monsters”–killers society first understood as werewolves, vampires, ghouls and witches or, later, Hitchcockian psychos. In Sons of Cain–a book that fills the gap between dry academic studies and sensationalized true crime–investigative historian Peter Vronsky examines our understanding of serial killing from its prehistoric anthropological evolutionary dimensions in the pre-civilization era (c. 15,000 BC) to today. Delving further back into human history and deeper into the human psyche than Serial Killers–Vronsky’s 2004 book, which has been called the definitive history of serial murder–he focuses strictly on sexual serial killers: thrill killers who engage in murder, rape, torture, cannibalism and necrophilia, as opposed to for-profit serial killers, including hit men, or “political” serial killers, like terrorists or genocidal murderers. These sexual serial killers differ from all other serial killers in their motives and their foundations. They are uniquely human and–as popular culture has demonstrated–uniquely fascinating.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Perhaps more than I ever wanted to know. I was aware that could happen and did. So know I know. No regrets.
⭐The author bombards you with the most illogical, irrational, absurd pseudo-ideas. For example, he says if breaking down defenses causes Primals, everyone in prison would be Primaling. Breaking down defenses by trained therapists and helping to guide someone into old feelings so they can feel them is the job of the therapist. Breaking down defenses does nothing by itself. All of his pseudo-arguments are just as poor. He goes on to quote Curtis Knecht who I met when I published an alternative primal newsletter. I knew him to have been a therapist turned opponent. I refused to publish his ad but I attended his talk in the late 1980s or early 90s. I have had real Primals and I have had real insights; they apparently have not. Yes, early on, therapists were in a rush to break down defenses. But they learned from their mistakes. It is also a longer journey than we first thought. “John Smith’s” book is a hate book and nothing more–from someone who was not able to feel his feelings and blames the therapy. He likely had a “cult-like” belief that he would reach some kind of nirvana and he didn’t reach it because he couldn’t feel.
⭐Well written and lay person friendly. I found the final hypothesis interesting, but am not entirely convinced. Reading it during the pandemic, one becomes very aware that the world has irrevocably changed and that studies like this will be extremely interesting in the next decade or two.
⭐Well written in-depth research about the slayers of man. Before reading this book I didn’t know much about killers at all but now I have so much knowledge on the subject, as grizzly as these guys got it still fascinates me how we live among killers . Peter has included a story about me at the end of the book and it was wild to read the story about myself I hope you guys enjoy the book as much as I did! Love, JenWeiss
⭐Love it! A must have for true crime fans.
⭐Loved this one by Veronski too. All of his books are informative and interesting.
⭐One of the more interesting books I’ve read. It was hard to put the book down and it was so informative. 10/10 would read again.
⭐Fantastic read! Absolutely Fascinating ! As a true crime enthusiast, with no professional education to the subject I found it to be pleasantly “easy” to read/ follow and found myself eager to learn more and investigate the cases , and various professionals mentioned !
⭐Unfortunately I only found the book to be interesting at both the beginning and near the end, probably the first and final 50 pages. The concluding evidence covers the rise of killers in the late 20th century and how events after WW2 shaped these individuals. The book also looks at events in the South Pacific as well as materials readily available on the news-stand.The meat and bones of the book are rather less revealing. It’s fine if you want to read about vampire and werewolf killings from the 1600’s throughout France, Spain and Italy. Most tales are short and rather ludicrous. Thus, some of the material is rather dull and repetitive.Nor is the author afraid to pat himself on the back or indulge in some self promotion. The book is littered with references to his previous work, near misses with real life killers or indeed those said killers being fan’s of his work. The title is incredibly misleading whilst the book itself is very uneven. Again, if you want to know more about repetitive cases from medieval Europe then this is for you.
⭐Rambling, unfocused, discursive, and repetitive. Sentences that torture syntax as badly as Bob Berdella tortured his victims; a tone overwhelmed by how impressed the author is with his own knowledge as Bundy was in his interviews offering oh so erudite insights into serial killers. In the early pages of the book–pretty much the first 100–the author relies on specious arguments that either have no support, that impose the author’s view onto the world around him, or that are mere speculation. At no point is a genuine forensic, researched, document-based exploration of the history of serial killers ever offered. The book reads like a series of excerpts pushed together between a single cover: information is repeated, often contradicting itself; references to the same people or events are offered repeatedly. Ultimately the book reads like a catalogue of killers and their deeds among a whole lot of pontificating with a few references to authoritative sources along the way.
⭐Very good
⭐Great book! I am a criminologist with years of experience working with serial killers, and I couldn’t put this book down! The amount of detail and research put into this is incredible!
⭐This book actually is a very sensible, thorough examination of the history of serial killing and the realization that these monsters have walked among us for a very long time, just cloaked in different forms. Very useful read to add to the canon of psychology of figuring out these deviants.
