Description

George Kennedy’s three volumes on classical rhetoric have long been regarded as authoritative treatments of the subject. This new volume, an extensive revision and abridgment of The Art of Persuasion in Greece, The Art of Rhetoric in the Roman World, and Greek Rhetoric under Christian Emperors, provides a comprehensive history of classical rhetoric, one that is sure to become a standard for its time. Kennedy begins by identifying the rhetorical features of early Greek literature that anticipated the formulation of “metarhetoric,” or a theory of rhetoric, in the fifth and fourth centuries b.c.e. and then traces the development of that theory through the Greco-Roman period. He gives an account of the teaching of literary and oral composition in schools, and of Greek and Latin oratory as the primary rhetorical genre. He also discusses the overlapping disciplines of ancient philosophy and religion and their interaction with rhetoric. The result is a broad and engaging history of classical rhetoric that will prove especially useful for students and for others who want an overview of classical rhetoric in condensed form.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “The discipline of rhetoric, as Mr. Kennedy shows meticulously, was central to ancient life.” ― The Economist”The panoptic vision, the reliable accounts, and deeply conservative view of what constitutes rhetoric and rhetorical theory have justly made these books standard for classicists and other disciplines. . . . Many of the qualities admired in the three volumes are transferred elegantly to the briefer format. There are few scholars who could construct such a compilation.” ― Bryn Mawr Classical Review About the Author George A. Kennedy is Paddison Professor of Classics, Professor of Comparative Literature, and Adjunct Professor of Speech Communication at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The author bounces back and forth through history and his ideas. It doesn’t feel like anyone tried to edit his work for readability. For a book written to teach rhetoric why is it almost impossible to understand? Awful book. It also doesn’t have any chapters, just a ton of long names for each section.

⭐Great book.

⭐I am fairly new to electronic books, but I find that the Kindle edition of G. A. Kennedy’s “A New History of Classical Rhetoric” has much to recommend it. The smaller amount of text on a page combined with a larger font size makes challenging material easier to read than a printed textbook. The search function is wonderful for locating specific passages, a feature completely unavailable in regular books and one of the reasons I bought the Kindle edition. In addition, the highlighting and note-taking features are adequate for annotating important sections, although it would be nice to have more highlighting colors to choose from for academic work. The Kindle version has one highly annoying flaw, however, and it seems like someone should have caught this problem in quality assurance. The notes are accessed by numbered links embedded in the text instead of appearing as footnotes or at the end of the chapters. This would be very convenient, but the problem is that about half the time the links lead to the wrong note. Notes are repeated, skipped, or randomly appear several numbers later, and it is a fruitless endeavor to try to backtrack through the text to find the note’s original referent. While not catastrophic in this particular work because most of the notes are citations or references to more information, I am hesitant to purchase the Kindle version of textbooks where the notes are crucial for in-depth study. Therefore, the Kindle version is good, but not quite good enough. Keep working on it!

A great book but unfortunately the book was damaged and dirty when it arrived and for the price of the book I did not expect it to be damaged.
