Description
The Oxford Handbook of the State in the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean offers a comprehensive survey of ancient state formation in western Eurasia and North Africa. Eighteen experts introduce readers to a wide variety of systems spanning 4,000 years, from the earliest known states in world history to the Roman Empire and its immediate successors. They seek to understand the inner workings of these states by focusing on key issues: political and military power, the impact of ideologies, the rise and fall of individual polities, and the mechanisms of cooperation, coercion, and exploitation. This shared emphasis on critical institutions and dynamics invites comparative and cross-cultural perspectives. A detailed introductory review of contemporary approaches to the study of the state puts the rich historical case studies in context. Transcending conventional boundaries between ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean history and between ancient and early medieval history, thisvolume will be of interest not only to historians but also anthropologists, archaeologists, sociologists, and political scientists. Its accessible style and up-to-date references will make it an invaluable resource for both students and scholars.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “Oxford’s distinguished series of handbooks on the ancient world continues to expand. This recent addition surveys the principal states in the ancient Near East and the Mediterranean from the fourth millennium BCE to the eighth century…. Each article provides an up-to-date overview of a state’s political history and institutional structure and a select bibliography of current scholarship…. An excellent work. Essential.”–S. M. ⭐Great book! Condition as listed or better.
⭐I have enjoyed few books in recent years as much as I enjoyed The Oxford Handbook of the State in the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean. While many of the historical volumes recently published in the Oxford Handbook series display an impressive degree of analytical rigor, this is especially true of the present volume. Like many titles in the Oxford Handbook series, this one is clearly intended for professors and graduate students. However, unlike many other titles in the series (at least among those that I have read), it will be very difficult for many undergraduate students or general readers to derive much profit from this one. There are two reasons for this. First, as already mentioned, many chapters in the book exhibit a high degree of analytical rigor, so much in fact that I think that many non-academics will find them hard to comprehend. Second, many of the chapters presuppose at least an advanced undergraduate understanding of major historical developments in the ancient Near East and Mediterranean. Thus, while some hardy undergraduate students might benefit from tackling the volume, I think that many will find the challenge too daunting. This is unfortunate, for all of the chapters are solid, and some are truly outstanding.I initially checked the book out of the library for only two chapters – John Haldon’s on the Byzantine Empire and Chase Robinson’s on early Islam. Both chapters were terrific, so I decided to read the chapters by Ian Wood on the Germanic states, Walter Ameling on Carthage, Seth Schwartz on Jewish states, Josef Wiesehöfer on Iranian empires, and Trevor Bryce on Anatolian states. These were so good that I decided to finish the volume, which also contains chapters on ancient Egypt, ancient Near Eastern city-states, Mesopotamian empires, ancient Greek and Hellenistic states, and ancient Rome. The volume opens with an excellent analytical chapter by Walter Scheidel that should be read by anyone with an interest in the state, whether ancient, medieval, or modern. (I saw in the notes to Scheidel’s chapter that he has a forthcoming book entitled Explaining Empire: Models for Ancient History; I look forward to its publication.) All of the chapters engage with the latest research in their respective areas, but there were a few scholars whose names came up again and again in different chapters. They include Charles Tilly, Bruce Trigger, and Norman Yoffee. I hope to read all of them soon.I have only two minor complaints about the book. First, I wish that Gojko Barjamovic’s chapter on Mesopotamian states had included more information on the Babylonian empires. Second, I wish that one or more authors would have engaged in a thorough analysis of the causes and roles of warfare in the ancient Near East and Mediterranean. I am aware that Oxford University Press also publishes The Oxford Handbook of Warfare in the Classical World, and I have read a number of chapters of that volume as well, but I did not find the analysis that I was looking for there either. Regardless, The Oxford Handbook of the State in the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean is an impressive piece of scholarship, and I expect that it will serve as a major work of reference for years to come. Now, if I could only find a similar volume with essays on ancient Armenia, Georgia, and Ethiopia, I could almost get over the defeat of the Cubs in the playoffs last year.
⭐Il libro è ben articolato lungo la storia del Vicino Oriente Antico e del Mediterraneo antico trattando diversi stati e periodi storici in modo chiaro e completo. Consigliato. Spedizione Amazon ottima come sempre.
