⭐In 1962, there was a brief but sharp border war between India and China. Since this conflict took place at the height of Cold War and coincided with the onset of the Cuban missile crisis, it was reported in the Western press as another case of a Communist country attacking a peaceful nation. The truth was far different.Neville Maxwell, an Australian, was posted in New Delhi in 1959 as a South Asia correspondent of the Times and therefore was on the scene prior to and at the time of the conflict. In 1967, he returned as a senior fellow from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, this time as a scholar. Therefore, he had a unique perspective both as a journalist and as a scholar. His definitive book, India’s China War, set the record straight once and for all. Ironically, in a country claiming to be a democracy, India banned his book. The truth was just too inconvenient. However, it was read by Henry Kissinger, who recommended it to President Nixon. When Nixon met Premier Chou En-Lai in his historic visit to China in 1972, he told the Chinese Premier that he finally and fully understood the truth of the conflict. Nixon, by the way, thought Chou was the greatest statesman of his era. Chou, however, complained to Nixon that Nehru was by far the most difficult and arrogant person he has ever dealt with.
⭐Just because Neville Maxwell ‘supposedly’ got un authorized access to an Indian government report, his biased and anti India book is sadly considered the best account of the war. He blames Nehru’s Forward policy of 1959 (as a justification for China to have attacked in 1962) but was India to just sit back and watch its territory taken by the PLA especially after their occupation of Tibet and Sinkiang in 1949. China started to build Highway 219 way back in 1951 which went across Aksai Chin area claimed by India and was completed it in 1957, so who’s the aggressor and why won’t any nation want to prevent further encroachment or loss of it’s territory by having posts. Neville Maxwell’s reason for his hated of India is best known to him and even predicted the collapse of democracy in India; calls the Dalai Lama a ‘doll figure’; American diplomats ‘loud mouth’ and other adjectives to describe Indian Generals or politicians but of course loved the praise he got from Premier Zhou En Lai for writing such a pro communist book even though he had no access to Chinese records or information
⭐It is really refreshing to read a book that is fair and balanced about India-China Border War. The book gives greatly detailed historical background of the borders between China and India, offers the political reasons why it turned into a dispute and shows the military reasons of the way conflict progressed. It is a GREAT source for people who are interested in these two Asian Giants troubled relations.
⭐donot waste money for this one
⭐A truth told long ago but forgotten
⭐Those who read the book will understand why most Chinese people believe the West is full of dishonest people who are hostile to the Chinese nation.India was the aggressor in the Sino-Indian war of 1962. Mao, the philosophic general, showed his utmost restraint, which only served to embolden the Indians. Finally, Mao decided to teach Nehru a memorable lesson. He didn’t want to conquer India nor to slaughter the Indians, but desired a long-lasting peace based on Indian respect of Chinese sovereignty. That’s why Mao ordered the PLA to withdraw and return the Indians their captured equipment, after utterly destroying the Indian forces in a single stroke. Nehru’s rash folly proved fatal to India’s aspirations. In his desperation, Nehru cast away his thin-veil of non-aligned position, and begged countries such as Israel for assistance. The lesson for the Indian people is simple: that country’s British educated elite class is indoctrinated with the expansionist mentality of their former masters, and their aggressive policies have brought and will bring disastrous consequence to their nation . Even their former master, the British, knew not to challenge the new China when Mao’s forces shelled the Royal Navy’s warships ventured into the Yangtze River, it is incredible that Nehru dared to cross the Chinese border to remove a Chinese post. As a philosopher and a poet, Mao was merciful, and his political beliefs made him regard India as a brother of the 3rd world which suffered from Western imperialism just like China. The future generation of Chinese leadership will not be so idealistic.Maxwell’s book was solely based on declassified Indian documents, which inevitably led to certain bias against China. But the picture of the Indian aggressor is more than apparent from the Indian sources alone. If one is interested in the military actions, one should consult Chinese sources. 1962’s China was in great economic hardship. The PLA forces that shattered the Indian divisions and brigades were several regiments of the local military district, and they were in no way elite troops of China. Their equipment and logistics were poor. But remember, worse equipped Chinese soldiers smashed UN forces in Korea. The tactics and efficiency of the PLA have had no match. It was no surprise that a small Chinese force easily annihilated the Indian armies.
⭐After 5 decades, this book is widely quoted in India but not a single person actually read it. Maxwell names VK Krishna Menon least culpable and Nehru next. Yet, this book is (mis)quoted by Indians to smear the legacies of those two visionary leaders. China retreated to pre-war position. Retreat is a serious military consequence (especially since China still claims NEFA as it’s own South Tibet) yet Maxwell brushes over it. Here is where Maxwell and Indians think alike. When enemy retreats, any other nation claims victory. Only Indians can INSIST they were defeated and humiliated. Indian Army performed very poorly, letting down their country. Yet, it’s the Indian Army who now claim to be victims politicians.
⭐The book if full of lies and speculation favorable to the CCP. If Kissinger and Nixon liked this book, it is because it served their interests at that time against the USSR. This book belongs in the trash can of history.
⭐Neville Maxwell’s account is one-sided and twists events leading to the infamous war as a shoddy attempt to portray India as an aggressor. At the best an exercise in Chinese propaganda.
⭐The content in the book is pure propganda as many of Indian veterans and international experts don’t agree with it saysRest book paper quality is fine and binding is fine
⭐Read “China’s India War” before this, so naturally this was other choice to buy it. Book is in good condition and available in lower price. Enlightening indeed..
⭐BOOK ELABORATES INDIA CHINA WAR OF 1962. NOT IN OTHER BOOK.
⭐Unearthed the great army disaster in high Himalaya.
